Lakeland Women's Soccer Misses Upset Opportunity
October 19, 2003

The Lakeland College Women's Soccer Team missed a fantastic opportunity today as they were defeated 4-2 by visiting Carroll College, who is currently ranked number 10 in the region.

A battered and bruised Muskie squad stepped onto the field ready to go to war against the Pioneers and that is just what they got. The Pioneers jumped out early and pressured the Muskies but it was the Muskies who got on the board first. In the 26th minute, Amanda Smith (Neenah, WI) ran onto a beautifully played through ball from Meghan Wudtke (Elk Grove Village, IL) and tucked the ball away neatly into the bottom corner of the Pioneer's goal to put the Muskies up 1-0. The Muskie lead would hold until intermission.

The second half turned out to be an exciting and competitive battle that saw plenty of action. In just the 47th minute the Pioneers lofted the equalizer past freshman Muskie goal keeper Alli Weiss (New Berlin, WI).

With the score now tied at one goal a piece the Pioneers really turned up the pressure and it paid off. In the 50th minute, a thirty yard chip shot found its way into the back of the goal and the Pioneers were up 2-1.

Never known for giving up, the Muskies battled back and in the 58th minute Smith, this time played forward by Amy Freier (Sheboygan, WI), tucked away her second goal of the game and 21st of the year.

The next 20 minutes saw both teams create goal scoring opportunities but neither one could capitalize. Unfortunately, the Pioneers found the eventual game winning goal in the 76th minute and went ahead 3-2.

Despite being down a goal the committed Muskies battled on and continued to create scoring opportunities as sophomore Nicki Smith (Neenah, WI) found herself with the ball at the far post but some how could not quite find the Pioneer goalmouth. Freshman midfielder Tracy Bins (Green Bay, WI) also had a great opportunity from 20 yards out but unfortunately pushed it just wide of the Pioneer goal.

The Pioneers would put the game out of reach in the 82nd minute as they scored the fourth and final goal of the afternoon to seal the result at 4-2.

The loss drops the Muskies to 6-10 overall. The Muskies will visit Alverno College in a non-conference affair Oct. 22nd at 3pm. The Muskies will say "Thank-you" to their senior graduating class this Saturday October 25th when they host Edgewood College in another LMC showdown.
