August 30, 2003

Rockford, IL - The lady Muskies soccer team overcame a sluggish first half then coasted to a 3-1 victory over host Rockford College. With the score knotted at 1-1 at halftime, the Muskies responded with a barrage of 18 shots in the second half, scoring two more times.

The women of Lakeland set the tone early when freshman Tracy Bins (Green Bay) set up sophomore Amanda Smith with the game's first goal in the 7th minute. Rockford evened the score in the 37th minute on a Lakeland defensive breakdown as Jenna Knipp waltzed into goal.

The Muskies were able to gain a 2-1 advantage in the 52nd minute on Bins' first collegiate goal off an assist from freshman Lorine Weiss. Junior Amy Herzfeldt, an Appleton native, gave the Muskies a 2 goal cushion on a penalty kick in the 71st minute.

For the game, the Muskies out-shot Rockford 34-4 and held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Defensively the Muskie women were led by sophomore back Briana Plautz (Green Bay). Junior goalkeeper Lindsay Olm (Sheboygan) went the distance and was tested for only 1 save on the day.

The women will be back in action on Saturday, September 6th at home against North Park College at 1:00 p.m., followed by the men's contest at 3:00 p.m.
