Herzfeldt-Smith Duo Lead Muskies Soccer To Victory
September 27, 2003
It looked like the Muskies losing streak would continue early on when Jen Gruenhagen
of the College of St. Catherine's scored in the game's 1st minute on a Lakeland
defensive miscue. However, Amanda Smith and Amy Herzfeldt decided to take matters
into their own hands Saturday afternoon in Sheboygan. The duo would figure in
all four Muskies goals en route to an impressive 4-1 victory, moving Lakeland
to an overall record of 2-6.
In the 13th minute with the Muskies trailing 1-0, Briana Plautz (Green Bay) struck a perfect ball on a corner kick to a slashing Amy Herzfeldt (Appleton) who buried an uncontested header into the top shelf. Amanda Smith (Neenah) took over from there as she scored an unassisted goal after stripping a Wildcat defender and then tucked it away nicely.
Smith would figure in the next goal as well as she set up Herzfeldt with her 2nd goal of the game on a cut back cross. The goal came in the 73rd minute after Smith beat two defenders to get the ball away to a crashing Herzfeldt who jammed it home for a 3-1 lead
In the 82nd minute, Smith put away a thru ball from Tracy Bins (Green Bay) and Amy Freier (Sheboygan) to end the scoring at 4-1.
Freshman goalkeeper Allie Weiss (New Berlin) went the distance and had 6 saves to preserve the win.
The women will be back in action on Sunday, September 28th as they host UW Platteville at 1:00 p.m.
