Assistant Professor of Instrumental Music and Director of Bands
Christopher Werner is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Lakeland College. His responsibilities at Lakeland College include directing the Lakeland Concert Band, the Lakeland Jazz Ensemble and Muskie Pep Band. He also directs the pit orchestra for the spring musicals, teaches applied clarinet and saxophone. He has also taught courses conducting, music appreciation and courses as a part of the general education core. In 2014, he will become Camp Director of the College’s annual Summer Music Camp.
Werner holds the Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting from the University of Nebraska where he studied conducting with Carolyn Barber and Tyler White. He has the distinction of being the first University of Nebraska DMA recipient of the Wind Conducting degree and also the first Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts F. Pace Woods Scholar in Music. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse studying with Alden J. Hoefer and master of music degree in wind conducting from the UW-Milwaukee studying conducting with Thomas Dvorak.
For the eight years prior to joining Lakeland’s faculty, Werner served as instrumental music teacher and music department chair at Central High School in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Passionate about new music, working with guest artists and composers, Werner instituted a commissioning project at Central High School that resulted in new works and composer residencies with Kim Archer, Rusty Banks, Travis Cross, Stephen Gryc, Roy Magnuson, and David Maslanka.
Werner is the Immediate Past President for the National Band Association-Wisconsin Chapter, and he has twice been awarded the “Citation of Excellence” from the National Band Association. In 2013, Werner completed a five-year commitment to the Wisconsin School Music Association’s “State Honors Project” after serving as coordinator for the State Honors Band for three years, and woodwind coach in the State Honors Orchestra for two years. Likewise, he has also served as a regional Vice-President for the Wisconsin Music Educators Association.
Werner is an accomplished clarinetist, while in La Crosse serving as assistant principal clarinet for the La Crosse Concert Band, principal/assistant principal clarinet with the UW-La Crosse Choral Union and substitute assistant principal clarinet with the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Werner is originally from Medford, Wisconsin; he currently resides in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
