Military Benefits
Lakeland College is State Agency Approved to certify all types of military benefits. The College's Veterans Coordinator will process all appropriate paperwork on a semester by semester basis.
If you are unsure of your eligibility for benefits, please contact your local VA Service Office (located in your local Courthouse) for assistance. Once you are certain of your eligibility, you can access all pertinent forms required to apply for your military benefits, or to transfer your benefits to Lakeland College from another College or University on Lakeland College website. Just click on the Government URL at the bottom of this page, and you will have access to everything you need. Complete all pertinent forms, and send them to Carol Butzen, Veterans Coordinator, Lakeland College, P.O. Box 359, Sheboygan, Wisconsin 53082-0359, or fax them to Ms. Butzen at (920) 565-1341. If you are taking classes on the main campus, you can also deliver the forms to Ms. Butzen in William A. Krueger, Room #219. Veterans should notify Ms. Butzen of enrollment per term, and anytime they drop, add, or withdraw from a course. Failure to do so could result in benefits not being processed or in overpayments to veterans.
STATE VETERANS - State veterans are required
to pay a 5% minimum payment per course, making monthly payments.
The state refunds tuition directly to the student. Lakeland
students should have their Lakeland balance paid in full before
Lakeland submits completed paperwork to the state for reimbursement.
State veterans are not exempt from interest, must complete
credit agreements and must pay for their textbooks each semester.
The government pays the student directly after grades are
submitted and the student has satisfactorily completed the
course(s).
MONTGOMERY GI BILL RECIPIENTS - These
students are either Chapter 30 or Chapter 1606 veterans, classified
as MGI's. These students are to pay a 5% minimum payment per
course, make monthly installments, sign credit agreements
and pay for their textbooks each semester. These students
are not interest exempt. The government pays the student directly
on a monthly stipend basis throughout the semester.
2171/1227 RECIPIENTS - These students
are required to pay a 5% minimum deposit per course and will
receive three-quarters of their tuition from the military.
The amount the veteran is refunded will be determined through
the individual's unit. Tuition assistance students' billing
is completed at Lakeland once the official, approved tuition
assistance form is received and submitted directly to the
military, which in turns pays the school its portion of the
tuition. Thus, these students are interest exempt. If these
students elect not to pay their portion per course up front,
they must complete the credit agreement for their portion.
CHAPTER 31 - These students are disabled
military classification. As a result, they are interest exempt,
and are required to pay nothing to Lakeland College. This
includes the application fee, textbook costs and tuition.
These students are required to complete the credit agreement.
CHAPTER 35 - These students are dependents
of parents who served in the military. This is also a federal
program that falls under the classification of the Montgomery
GI students.
Federal benefit recipients need to complete
the following forms to begin the processing of their military
benefits:
1. If a veteran is applying for MGI benefits
for the first time, he/she needs to complete the Application
For Education Benefits, #22-1990 and return it to Lakeland.
Lakeland will submit the completed form to the government
along with the Enrollment Certification, #22-1999. It will
take a minimum of 45 days to get the file in order and authorize
payments to begin.
2. If a veteran is transferring his/her
benefits over to Lakeland from another school, or if a current
Lakeland student receiving military benefits changes his/her
major, he/she needs to complete the Request for Change of
Program or Place of Training, #22-1995 and return it to Lakeland.
Lakeland will then submit it to the government along with
the Enrollment Certification, #22-1999. It will take a minimum
of 45 days to get the file in order and authorize payments
to begin.
3. In the case of a Chapter 35,
Dependent, the form they must complete the Request for Change
of Program or Place of Training (Survivors' and Dependents'
Educational Assistance, #22-5495). Lakeland will then submit
it to the government along with their Enrollment Certification,
#22-1999. It will take a minimum of 45 days to get the file
in order and authorize payments to begin.
