Record number attends 2013 Movers & Shakers Gala

A record crowd of 740 guests enjoyed a spectacular night of celebrity dancing in an evening of fun and fundraising at the sixth annual Movers & Shakers Gala, a benefit for Lakeland College and the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra, held May 18 at Lakeland.

This star-studded night featured an all-star lineup of seven well-known local celebrities who had danced in previous galas. The evening also featured special guests Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Chelsie Hightower from ABC's "Dancing with the Stars."

Lakeland's Todd Wehr Center was once again transformed into a beautiful ballroom, including a dance floor framed by wall-to-wall carpeting, a massive lighting setup and huge video screens that put a who's who of Sheboygan County in the spotlight.

The celebrities were each paired with a professional dancer, and after months of training they competed to win the support of four judges and the guests, who were busy buying votes both in the ballroom that evening and online for months leading up to the event.

Each dancer selected a local charity or nonprofit organization that benefitted from their efforts. Half the proceeds from the votes sold for each dancer are distributed to these special organizations.

Wally Waldhart won the Gala Championship as well as the Judges' Choice trophies for his memorable version of the jive. Votes for Waldhart, vice president of sales and communications at ACUITY, also benefitted the Theatre for Young Audiences. He was sponsored by ACUITY.

The evening was filled with a wide array of performances that brought the audience to its feet several times. Other local celebrities in the Movers & Shakers lineup included:

Lisa Brotz, who came in hot off her meticulous 2012 tap medley. She is employed by Plastics Engineering Co., and also owns and operates Northstar Farm. Votes for Brotz also benefitted Lakeshore Community Health Center. Brotz was sponsored by Plastics Engineering Company.

Suzie Herold, medical director of executive wellness for Prevea, won the Judges' Choice Award in 2011 for her knockout performance of the samba. Votes for Herold also benefitted Safe Harbor. Herold was sponsored by Prevea Health.

Zukie Hirota, who is involved in management at Lakeland College's Japan campus, riveted the audience in 2010 with her unique performance of the Latin showcase dance "Fragrance of Japan." Votes for Hirota also benefitted Lakeland College Japan campus. Hirota was sponsored by Lakeland College Japan and NIC International College in Japan.

Nellie Schmitt, a popular local entertainer who danced the rumba in the first Gala in 2008. Votes for Schmitt also benefitted Meals on Wheels. Schmitt was sponsored by Loretta Schmitt, Jos. Schmitt & Sons Construction Co., Inc. and friends.

Deborah Wente, the chair of the Movers & Shakers organizing committee and an active community businessperson and volunteer, returned after her graceful performance of the fox trot in 2010. Votes for Wente also benefitted PSC, Partners Seeking a Cure. Wente was sponsored by the Grover Family Foundation, Inc.

Ed Zieve, an octogenarian and CEO of Kees Inc., of Elkhart Lake, got a standing ovation for his performance of the jitterbug. Votes for Zieve also benefitted the Elkhart Lake Library. Zieve was sponsored by the Zieve Family Foundation.

One of the evening's dancers, Paula Gentine, was unable to be part of the evening because of the recent passing of her father. Paula and her family sent their regrets. The Gala family appreciates the Gentine family's support of the Gala as well as Paula's contributions as a Gala committee member.

The audience got a preview of the 2014 Movers & Shakers Gala. The group will include Jason Bemis, Danielle Kohler, Ashok Rai, Nicki Suprick, Jay Torke and Tracy Wusterbarth with more names to come.

The seventh annual Movers & Shakers Gala is set for May 17, 2014.

Chmerkovskiy and Hightower posed for photos with Gala guests at the pre-event reception before joining the audience for the dancing. Niki Rhyan and Roman Brotz each won auctions for the thrill of dancing with Chmerkovskiy and Hightower, and the two stars closed out the evening with their own spotlight dance.

Matt Quasius, chief operating officer of Quasius Construction and a dancer in 2011, served as emcee for the evening.

Major sponsors of the 2013 Gala were the Frank G. and Frieda K. Brotz Family Foundation and Sargento Foods Inc. Additional event sponsors included Festival Foods, Masters Gallery Foods, Inc., Sheboygan Chevrolet-Cadillac and Zimmermann Printing.

Lakeland responds to Payscale.com survey

To Lakeland College students, parents, alumni and friends:

Lakeland College is aware of a report circulating on the Web that identifies Lakeland, as well as other colleges, as a poor value in Payscale.com's 2013 College Education ROI (Return on Investment) Rankings. Being portrayed in this light is shocking, given that Lakeland has been one of the most affordable private institutions in Wisconsin over the past 20 years. We are also confident that our 150-year history of academic accomplishments is a more accurate measure of our value to graduates and the communities that we serve. That said, we cannot remove those rankings from the Internet, nor can we tamp down the media hype over this survey.

However, we can inform those who share our concern for the college, and for accuracy, that the report's methodology and design are significantly flawed. Not only is it based on an inaccurate premise regarding the cost of a Lakeland College education, but it also fails to reflect a representative sample of our graduates. We cite the following to support our position:

The report assumes Lakeland graduates paid full tuition all four years. Currently, 99 percent of students attending Lakeland's traditional program receive financial aid. After these grants and scholarships, a typical current Lakeland student pays $7,500 for tuition and $7,000 for room and board. Over four years that totals $58,000, not the $130,000 figure used as the premise for this report.

The report also relies on self-reported salary data from only 89 Lakeland graduates who completed a survey on Payscale.com. This year alone, Lakeland graduated nearly 500 undergraduates, and over the past five years, the college has graduated just over 2,700 undergraduates.

The results also exclude any graduates who live outside of the U.S., or who have pursued education beyond the bachelor's degree, which increases Lakeland's graduation total over the past five years to nearly 4,000 students.

The survey group is self-selected - its only participants were graduates who were, on their own, seeking the Payscale.com site and its data on salaries. A valid statistical survey would attempt to identify a survey group that effectively represents the entire group of people reflected by the survey.

The widely divergent rankings of institutions from year to year indicate insufficient and/or inaccurate data.

We could go on, but our point is that making such a sweeping statement about any college's value based on a non-scientific, non-representative sample of graduates is impossible, and, frankly, irresponsible.

While studies like the one conducted by Payscale.com increase focus on their website, generate emotional debate and provide attention that they and their advertisers love, the insubstantial fluff they produce makes it difficult to have a meaningful discussion about the real issues facing higher education today. The immediate cost of higher education and its long-term value are subjects of very real concern in this country and around the world. At Lakeland, we take those issues seriously and strive to keep the cost of a quality education within reach.

Lakeland College has been and will always be committed to delivering an experience that will enable our graduates to earn a living and to achieve the intellectual rewards associated with a college education, and I am proud of the work and dedication of our faculty and staff. We are, without exception, focused on student success and providing a transformative education.

	Sincerely,
Daniel W. Eck
Interim President

More than 700 graduate at Lakeland's 151st commencement

Lakeland College awarded degrees to more than 700 students Sunday as the college celebrated its 151st commencement.

A total of 715 graduates received diplomas, including 492 undergraduates and 223 graduate students. Just over 360 graduates participated in the ceremony, held in the college's Wehr Center.

The undergraduate group included 175 students who attended classes at Lakeland's main campus program and 317 students who took classes through Lakeland's evening, weekend and online program, which includes seven centers around Wisconsin.

World class sailor, Emmy Award-winning television commentator and author Gary Jobson delivered the commencement address. He shared a series of short, humorous stories from his 57-year sailing career (that began at age 6) and his 28-year job with ESPN.

He encouraged graduates to write down their goals and take time to plan their lives, find ways to inspire and help other people, use their training when facing life's curve balls and do things that no one has done before.

"Always say nice things about people," Jobson said. "It will come back to help you. You never know what's going to happen in life. When you help others, in the end, the person you could be helping out the most is you."

He noted a recent New York Times article that reported college graduates chances of getting hired have increased 9 percent over other groups. "I have good news for you - the world is ready for you, and you are prepared," Jobson said.

A survivor of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and America's Cup champion, Jobson was awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters degree for his career and his efforts that have raised more than $43 million for cancer research.

Also receiving honorary degrees on Sunday were former Lakeland College Trustee Bill Younger (honorary doctor of humane letters) and David Moyer, conference minister for the Wisconsin Conference of the United Church of Christ, who received an honorary doctor of divinity.

Younger's leadership at Lakeland has spanned four decades, and also includes service as the director of the Center for Business and Economics. Younger has served as a friend, advisor and mentor to Lakeland presidents and senior staff, and has been a tireless advocate of the college and its mission.

Moyer, who is retiring this July after working more than 40 years in the ministry, delivered the sermon at Lakeland's baccalaureate service, which was held earlier on Sunday in the Bradley Theatre.

The weekend got started with the Graduation Celebration Banquet on Saturday night, where the college handed out two major student awards.

Sarah Wagner, of Sheboygan, who graduated with a bachelor's in international business and marketing, was named winner of the Clarence H. Koehler Campus Senior Award. Diane Le Roy, of Green Bay, who earned a bachelor's in marketing, was named winner of the Robert W. Lope Award.

Lakeland women's basketball rummage sale is a success

The team collected a number of donations of items filling the Wehr Athletic Center lobby April 19-21. Items such as men's and women's clothing, children's clothing and toys, furniture, electronics, books and movies were all available to purchase, and Head Women's Basketball Coach Lindsey VandeHoef was very pleased with the turnout of donations as well as people shopping the rummage sale.

"We had a great turnout both with donations and people from the community shopping at our sale," VandeHoef said. "I am proud to say we reached our goal thanks to all those that supported our fundraiser and donated items for us to sell."

The money from the fundraiser will go toward the women's basketball team's trip overseas to China that it will be making in May 2014. The team will play several games in Beijing, Nanchang and Shanghai, and professors David Lynch and Charles Stockman also will join the team overseas to conduct a class for course credit for team members.

"It was really fun to talk to people from the surrounding areas to tell them what our team is saving up for," VandeHoef said. "Some even would donate money or drove back to campus to drop off items to sell for us."

The Muskie women's basketball program had history of traveling abroad during former coach April Arvan's tenure, and the plan is to get back to tradition of playing internationally every four years. NCAA rules allow teams to travel overseas once every four years for a team trip in the summer.

The date for next year's rummage sale has already been set for April 18-20, 2014, at the Wehr Center.

Former Muskie Ringeisen finds football success in Europe

The conclusion of a four-year football career at Lakeland College was not the end of football for former Muskie Martin Ringeisen, who has found a unique place to ply his trade in the sport.

Ringeisen, a 2007 graduate of Lakeland with a degree in computer science, is part of a growing list of Muskies who have played professional football overseas in Europe. He has also had a good share of success playing in several different countries, and the three-year veteran of playing in Europe plans to head back overseas to play again this year.

Ringeisen, a native of St. Cloud, Wis., and a graduate of New Holstein High School, played football from 2003-06 at Lakeland. He was a tight end and caught 12 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown in his four-year career, playing on successful teams that finished with a 28-13 record over those four years. Despite his relatively modest statistics, Ringeisen decided after college that he didn't want to be done with football, and decided to look abroad for opportunities.

Ringeisen first found out about European football from former Muskie quarterback Brent Luebke, who played in Austria upon his graduation from Lakeland in 2005. Former Muskies Ryan Van De Loo and Ryan Maiuri also played overseas, and Ringeisen credits Van De Loo with helping him get connected with teams in Europe.

Ringeisen began his professional career in 2009 in Austria when he played for the Linz Steelsharks. When he began playing in Europe, Ringeisen made a position change to quarterback, and though his team was not a success on the field, finishing with a 0-9 record, he said he was able to learn a lot, including what teams in Europe are looking for in an American player both on and off the field.

In 2010, Ringeisen signed with the Wernigerode Mountain Tigers in Germany. In his second season as a quarterback, Ringeisen led the team in Germany to a 10-0 record, the first perfect season in team history.

"Having that be my first perfect season in any sport ever was something truly amazing," Ringeisen said. "It is something that nobody can take away from me."

Ringeisen bounced around in 2011, with a spell of bad luck resulting in him playing for two different teams for reasons out of his control. After the 2010 season, he had a number of teams looking at him due to his experience and his team's perfect season the year before, and he joined the Esbjerg Hurricanes in Denmark.

"That was my first season where I was able to be a part of building the playbook for the offense and help with the preparations for the game plan each week," Ringeisen said. "After a few games we were 3-0, but there was talk about the team losing one of its biggest sponsors. Sure enough, two weeks later I had a meeting with the president saying the team no longer had enough money to cover my full contract."

Rather than giving up on his dream, Ringeisen immediately began looking for another team. He signed with the Coventry Jets out of England on a Wednesday, and capped a crazy week by playing his last game with the Hurricanes on that Saturday. He finished his final game with one passing touchdown and three rushing scores, including a 70-yard TD to clinch the win in the fourth quarter via a 50-point mercy rule, a bittersweet finish to his season with the Denmark team, which was 5-0 at the time of his departure and capped a 15-game winning streak for teams Ringeisen played for.

While playing in England, Ringeisen played on a team that struggled on the field, but he was able to teach the European players in the fundamentals of the game. Then in his fifth game with the England team, he tore his MCL, ending his season.

Despite his injury, Ringeisen decided to push on and said he has spent "countless hours in the pool, gym and weight room" rehabilitating his knee. And after all that work, he has signed on to play in Europe once again, this time for a team for Lausanne University in Switzerland. He is the team's starting quarterback and also its offensive coordinator, and before he went to Switzerland he spent several weeks working out with Lakeland's wide receivers in preparation for his season overseas.

Remembering his time at Lakeland, Ringeisen credits a number of former professors as well as his coaches with being influences on him as he has built a career in football.

"The way Lakeland most affected me to be ready to be able to enjoy such an amazing opportunity can be summed up in two points," Ringeisen said, "the first probably being my influences from some of my professors. Pam Engebretson, Karl Elder, David Lynch...in their classes I was able to learn how to use certain words in the correct order to help build creditability. (I gained) the ability to stand up in front of crowd and just improve something from the heart with only a few minutes to prepare. And how to end a very productive teaching session by asking: 'Does anyone have any questions, comments or concerns?'

"The second point would be summed up in four letters-R.Y.F.P. Reach. Your. Full. Potential." (This was a point emphasized by former Lakeland College football coach Jim Zebrowski) Whether it was in the classroom, on the football field, or just in life, Lakeland taught me to always keep striving to be great. This same attitude kept me striving to reach my goal of playing football overseas."

John Stossel Lectures at Lakeland College

Armed with the central planks of the libertarian platform, Emmy Award-winning journalist and commentator John Stossel addressed a packed Bradley Theatre at Lakeland College's 12th annual Charlotte and Walter Kohler Distinguished Business Lecture on April 25.

Stossel elaborated during his 40-minute talk on his support of free markets for basic needs like health care and suggested that the market would regulate itself by rating hospitals, which would earn reputations, and forcing changes that would benefit consumers through competition.

"That's creative destruction that makes everything better," Stossel said. "Things get better in a free society. As we get richer, we get smarter."

Stossel has devoted his career to forwarding his beliefs, beginning with his lengthy stay at ABC News where he was a fixture on the popular show "20/20," and now at Fox News, where his current program, "Stossel," started in 2009.

Along the way, he's received numerous honors and awards, including 19 Emmy awards, and has been honored five times for excellence in consumer reporting by the National Press Club.

"I'm a monkey on TV that tries to demonstrate principles that economists smarter than me have taught me," he said. "The rules (of government) are well intended, but they're insane."

Stossel pointed to everyday products and services that are the result of entrepreneurs and ingenuity, not government rules and regulations. But when something goes wrong, he said Americans of all political persuasions are often quick to call for government intervention, saying "There ought to be a law."

A prime example, he said, came with the creation of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) by the federal government following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Cities were allowed to opt out and hire private firms that followed TSA rules, and San Francisco did. Stossel said studies showed that San Francisco screeners did a better job than their TSA peers in other cities of finding potentially dangerous carry-on items. Ultimately, he said, some in government said the ability to opt-out wasn't considered advantageous to federal government.

"Wouldn't McDonald's like to say that to Burger King?" Stossel said. "Government never fires itself. Competition makes people better. Government is like someone who jumps in front of a parade and says 'I lead the parade.'"

Prior to the lecture, Stossel met with approximately 40 Lakeland students enrolled in introductory mass media and news writing classes and a microeconomics course for a question and answer session.

He answered a variety of questions about his career and viewpoints, and discussed how he overcame a stuttering problem. He noted that he entered journalism without a formal degree in the discipline, and encouraged students interested in the field to learn the trade by doing it as much as possible, especially with today's numerous ways to communicate.

Following the lecture, he signed copies of his latest book, "No, They Can't: Why Government Fails-But Individuals Succeed."

Stossel's appearance at Lakeland is made possible by a gift from The Charlotte and Walter Kohler Charitable Trust. Lakeland annually brings a nationally known business or economic figure to its main campus to speak with the Lakeland community and the public.

The Charlotte and Walter Kohler Charitable Trust is named for former Wisconsin Governor Walter Kohler Jr. and his wife, Charlotte. The Trust was established by Charlotte Kohler to preserve the society and culture that made their good fortune and success possible.

Business faculty member named Fulbright Scholar

Lakeland College's Scott Niederjohn, the Charlotte and Walter Kohler Associate Professor of Economics and Business, has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar to teach in Luxembourg in the fall of 2013.

Niederjohn is one of approximately 1,100 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program in 2013-2014. He is Lakeland's first Fulbright Scholar.

Niederjohn will teach an undergraduate course on the U.S. economy, culture and business practices at the University of Luxembourg and present a series of lectures on the U.S. housing crisis and subprime meltdown to students in the master of science in banking and finance program.

He will also continue to build the relationship between Lakeland and the University of Luxembourg, and represent Lakeland at European student recruitment events and develop new exchange relationships for Lakeland students. The first Lakeland students are expected to study in Luxembourg in spring 2014, and Niederjohn will play a significant role in assisting with their transition.

"I'm very honored to receive this award and I'm excited to have this opportunity, which I consider the highlight of my professional career," Niederjohn said. "This will be a rich experience for me and my family, and Lakeland will also benefit significantly."

Niederjohn's interest in the country of Luxembourg dates back to a meeting in 2010 with the Luxembourg-American Cultural Society (LACS) in nearby Belgium, Wis. Since that time, Lakeland has worked closely with the society on projects related to student internships and business development activities between the U.S. and Luxembourg. Niederjohn has represented Lakeland at numerous meetings and events related to the LACS and Luxembourg.

In February 2012, Niederjohn and then-Senior Vice President Dan Eck were invited by the University of Luxembourg to visit and explore opportunities to work together. The trip included meetings with several professors and senior administrators from the university, as well as a meeting with Luxembourg's minister for higher education.

Niederjohn and Eck were also part of a local group that greeted Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker when he visited the Sheboygan area in May 2012. Lakeland Trustee Deb Ansay, an active supporter of the Luxembourg American Cultural Society in Belgium, Wis., has been instrumental in creating these opportunities for Lakeland.

"I'm especially thankful to Deb for her role in my relationship with the University of Luxembourg which has resulted in this honor," Niederjohn said. "I'm grateful to her for what she has done to make this possible."

In addition to teaching, Niederjohn will use the trip to strengthen ties between Lakeland and Luxembourg, the University of Luxembourg and other European institutions.

"Lakeland currently has a number of opportunities for our students to gain an international experience, and we are always looking to expand those offerings," Niederjohn said.

He also plans to use this opportunity to identify best practices for "internationalizing" Lakeland's business curriculum by interviewing and learning from University of Luxembourg faculty and staff. Given Luxembourg's central European location, he will attend college recruitment events in Europe on Lakeland's behalf and meet with other institutions that show promise as exchange locations for Lakeland students.

"As the business world becomes more global, a collegiate international experience is critical for students as they embark upon their careers," Niederjohn said. "Our business division has identified 'internationalizing' our programs as a primary strategic plan going forward, beginning with our international business major."

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to "increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries."

The Fulbright Program has provided almost 310,000 participants, including 43 Nobel Prize winners - chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential - with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.

Fulbright recipients are among more than 40,000 individuals participating in U.S. Department of State exchange programs each year.

Currently, the Fulbright Program operates in more than 155 countries worldwide.
