Lakeland Track and Field preview: Young Muskies look to make an impact

The Lakeland College track and field team, led by head coach Peter Hahm, has assembled a talented team with a solid mix of experienced returners as well as talented high school stars who Hahm hopes will make an impact.

The Muskies will be led by senior sprinter Joey Salazar (Beaver Dam, Wis.), who will compete in the 55-meter dash as well as the 200 and the 4 x 200 meter relay, and junior distance runner Ryan Graves (Munising, Mich.), who hopes to make impact in the 3000- and 5000-meter races.

Muskies win seventh straight with strong perimeter defense, clinch NAC berth

Athletics - Women's Basketball

The Lakeland College women's basketball team exacted some revenge with a 60-54 victory over Northern Athletics Conference North Division foe Maranatha Baptist Bible College on Thursday night.

With the win, the Muskies (16-6, 11-5 NAC) extend their win streak to a season-high seven games. The Muskies also clinched a spot in the NAC tournament, returning after a one-year hiatus.

It wasn't all smooth sailing for Lakeland as they were once again plagued by a slow start, trailing by eight points, 20-12, six minutes into the game. The Muskies chipped away at the deficit and a Becky Mayo (Gladstone, Mich.) layup with 28 seconds left in the half tied the game at 26, the halftime score. The key to the Crusaders first half dominance was on the glass where they held a plus eight rebounding margin, 25-17. They were also able to force 12 Lakeland turnovers, which Maranatha Baptist converted into eight points.

The Muskies shot 35.5 percent (11-for-31) from the floor, 20 percent (1-for-5) from the 3-point line and just 50 percent (3-for-6) from the charity stripe. Mayo had a game-high eight points and eight rebounds in the half, keeping the Muskies in the game.

The defense held the Crusaders to just 34.5 percent (10-for-29) from the floor and didn't allow a 3-point basket in six attempts. Their solid play down the stretch kept Maranatha Baptist from stretching their lead.

The Muskies carried their late first-half success into the second, tying the game twice before taking the lead for good on another Mayo layup. Lakeland would lead by as many as 10 points on three separate occasions. While the Crusaders would finish the game on a 4-0 run, they weren't able to complete the comeback as time ran out.

The Muskies bench led the way in the second half, outscoring Maranatha Baptist's reserves 19-2 in the period. Lakeland used a 40 percent (14-for-35) shooting performance, including three 3-point baskets to seal the victory. The defense also stepped up, holding Maranatha to just 30 percent (12-for-40) shooting in the second half, again holding them scoreless from behind the arc.

Sophomore Leah Eisner (Stevens Point, Wis.) led Lakeland with eight second half points, while senior Alyssa Schuttenhelm (Waterford, Wis.) added six points. The perimeter defense was the key to the game, as Lakeland was 4-for-15 from deep, while the Crusaders went 0-for-15.

Mayo finished with a team-high 12 points and nine rebounds, while reserves Schuttenhelm and Eisner finished with 11 and eight points respectively. Sophomore Dana Henrichs (Fall Creek, Wis.) added nine points and five rebounds.

Senior Becca Tilleman (Green Bay, Wis.) recorded her 201st steal in tonight's contest, placing her second all-time behind 2002 graduate Jill Dewane (252).

Lakeland will look to improve its spot in the NAC tournament on Saturday, Feb. 11, as the Muskies host NAC North Division rival Marian University.
Athletics - Women's Basketball

The Lakeland College women's basketball team won its sixth consecutive game on Tuesday night, defeating Northern Athletics Conference North Division rival Concordia University Wisconsin, 54-50.

The Muskies (15-6, 10-5 NAC) jumped out to a large first half lead and were able to withstand numerous runs from the Falcons to pull out the victory.

Lakeland was ready to play from the tip as the Muskies went on a 9-0 run, holding the Falcons (14-8, 13-3 NAC) scoreless for the first 4.5 minutes of the game. The Muskies built on their momentum, taking their largest lead, 35-16, with 3:48 left in the half. Lakeland would allow two free throws before halftime, taking a 16 point, 35-19 lead heading into the locker room. The 19 points are the lowest total in one half for the Falcons all season, while the 19 point deficit was also a high water mark on the year.

The Muskies were held scoreless for seven minutes before senior Alyssa Schuttenhelm (Waterford, Wis.) got a layup at the 13:08 mark. Concordia Wisconsin would make it close with a 13-2 run to close the Lakeland lead to two, 45-43, with 2:22 left in the game. The game remained in the balance until senior Becca Tilleman (Green Bay, Wis.) hit two free throws with five seconds left to give the Muskies a 54-50 lead they would not relinquish.

Lakeland failed to have a double figure scorer for the first time all season as Leah Eisner (Stevens Point, Wis.), Dana Henrichs (Fall Creek, Wis.) and Genke all finished with eight points, while Genke finished with a game-high 12 rebounds.

Galla named head men's and women's soccer coach

Adam Galla, a standout soccer player and top assistant coach at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Mo., is Lakeland College's new head men's and women's soccer coach.

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with everyone at Lakeland and take the programs to the next step," said Galla. "I look forward to taking over both programs and establishing them as top contenders in Division III, as well as in the conference."

At Central Methodist, Galla helped established the women's program as a competitor, taking the Lady Eagles from a 3-12-3 overall mark in the 2010-11 season to a 14-3-2 record in the 2011-12 season. He led the Lady Eagles to a 4-2-1 record in the Heart of America Athletic Conference and a No. 3 seed in the HAAC Tournament.

Galla brings seven years of coaching experience at various club soccer teams in Missouri. He served as head coach for the Columbia Pride U-18 Boys' team and an assistant coach for the 1996 Girl's Olympic Development Program (ODP) team. Gala holds his USSF "D" License, and in June 2010 he earned his NSCAA National Diploma.

A native of St. Charles, Mo., Gala was a four-year letter winner at William Woods University in Fulton, Mo., and was the backbone of the Owls' defense.

"Adam has a great mix of collegiate and club experience that will serve him well as he leads our programs," said Lakeland athletic director Jane Bouche. "He helped turn the women's program around at Central Methodist, and now we give him the reins of our programs as we look to make a move in our conference."

At Lakeland, Galla inherits a women's program that has struggled over the past three seasons, including a 5-14 overall mark last season, including 4-8 in the Northern Athletics Conference. The Muskies haven't had a winning record since the 2008 season and haven't made post-season play since the NAC's inaugural season in 2006.

On the men's side, Galla takes over a team that is on the steady rise. The Muskies finished last season with a 5-4-2 NAC record, 8-7-5 overall and just missed post-season play. Lakeland looks to return to the NAC Tournament after a two-year hiatus.

Galla earned his master's degree of education from Central Methodist in 2011 and earned a bachelors in social work from William Woods in 2007.

"I am thankful for the opportunity to be part of the Lakeland community and I am ready to get started," said Galla.

Athletics - Women's Basketball

The Lakeland College women's basketball team got another big win on Saturday, defeating the visiting Eagles of Benedictine University 57-55.

The Muskies (14-6, 9-5 NAC) trailed for most of the game, however, solid defense and aggressive post play enabled Lakeland to come away with the win.

Lakeland started slow, shooting just 25 percent (7-for-28) from the floor in the first half, while Benedictine was ready to play, taking an early 10-point lead that they would stretch to 19 on two separate occasions. Senior Becca Tilleman (Green Bay, Wis.) would score five of the teams seven points before the half to cut the lead to 12, 32-20, at halftime.

Benedictine took advantage of a poor defensive effort by the Muskies, shooting 52 percent (13-for-25) from the floor and 66.7 percent (4-for-6) from the 3-point line. The Eagle dominated inside, outscoring the Muskies 10-4 in the paint and holding a 24-to-11 rebounding edge.

The second half looked to be more of the same as the Lakeland offense continued to struggle and the defense lagged.
