Yes, I Do Still Work Here
Posted on 9/2/2008 10:40:49 AM

It's been quite the summer, four months of quiet on my end. As I told some of our on-campus students who returned to class this past Tuesday, I blinked back in June and found myself in August. Unbelievable. So, for those in suspense, I will be returning for my third year as Associate Director of Admissions here at Lakeland College.

That said, I'm going to give all you 18 and under folks some advice that many of us over the age of 18 have already realized: the summer after your senior year will be your shortest yet, and they only get shorter as years pass on. Just some food for thought.

Anyway, my summer was jam packed with projects and visits and sunshine-enjoying escapades. I really didn't do anything too amazing; had some old friends back in town from their respective colleges or jobs, which was nice. I had the opportunity to go camping on Washington Island in Northern Wisconsin. If you're not familiar with the area, you take the "thumb" of Wisconsin all the way north to the tip, and then get on a ferry and ride for about twenty minutes to the island.

I soon discovered that being on an island doesn't guarantee you sandy beaches. In fact, the only beach on the island was made up of hundreds of thousands of egg-sized, smooth rocks, called Schoolhouse Beach. The rocks that make up the beach are native (yes, native rocks) to the area and are formed specially by the way the waves interact with the shoreline. There is even a fine if you are caught removing even on of these rocks. I left them alone; my girlfriend, I will speculate, didn't, but that's only speculation as I cannot confirm or deny if it took place.

Anyway, I've been bugging next year's freshman class already, trying to figure out what it is they want out of their future education. I've met with dozens of them and their families over the summer, and good number of them have applied. If you're a high school senior, RIGHT NOW is the time when you should be applying to your schools of choice. If you're reading this, I'm assuming/hoping that Lakeland is somewhere on your list.

Before I get too all-over-the-place, I'm going to sign off until the next post, which will be frequent from now on. While you're anxiously waiting at your computer desk for my next message with a 2-gallon jug of coffee and a week's supply of No Doze, why don't you apply for admission?

Until next time,

Ross
