Jeanne Bitkers, a champion of early childhood education and for decades a leader in the Sheboygan Area School District, has joined Lakeland College as an Associate Dean of Lakelands Kellett School of Adult Education.
Bitkers, who recently retired as co-superintendent of the SASD, brings over 30 years of classroom and administrative experience to Lakeland.
In her new role, Bitkers will assist with providing academic oversight for Lakelands master of arts in counseling program, as well as with the creation of a faculty development program for all adjunct Kellett School faculty throughout the state.
She will also work with course administration in Lakeland College Online and teach one course per semester beginning in the spring of 2006.
Its rare when you have the opportunity to add someone of Jeannes expertise and experience to your staff, said Allan Mitchler, Lakelands Vice President of Enrollment Management.
Aside from her skills, Lakeland will benefit from her contacts and her outstanding reputation. Were thrilled about the prospects of growing an already-thriving counseling program, and equipping our adjunct faculty with the skills they need to be even better instructors.
Bitkers, a Sheboygan native, was an educator in Sheboygan for 33 years, beginning as a teacher. She was a driving force behind creation of Sheboygans Early Learning Center, which has been recognized by the state as a model for early childhood education, and she served as the ELCs first principal.
Bitkers later became director of elementary education and served as co-superintendent in Sheboygan, the states 10th largest school district with 10,171 students and a budget of over $100 million.
This is a new challenge and new opportunity for me, Bitkers said. I am looking forward to working with adult students and instructors who believe in lifelong education and are investing their time and energies into learning and growing.
I am proud of the fact that throughout my career I have been able to work as a teacher both in the classroom with children and as an administrator with both children and adults. I consider this invitation to work for Lakeland a real honor.
Bitkers earned a bachelors degree in elementary education from Mount Mary, a masters in curriculum and instruction from UW-Madison and she is nearing the completion of her doctorate from UWM.
Lakeland is in its 26th year of offering complete bachelors degree programs for working adults. Lakeland offers bachelors and masters degrees at seven adult learning centers in Wisconsin including Chippewa Falls, the Fox Cities, Green Bay, Madison, Milwaukee, Sheboygan and Wisconsin Rapids.
Total enrollment this past year in Lakelands adult undergraduate, online and graduate programs was 3,879 students.
