Jim Cape, a veteran of fundraising and non-profit work, has joined Lakeland College's staff as Vice President of Advancement.
Cape will lead Lakeland's advancement team, which includes resource development, alumni relations and communications and marketing. He replaces Dirk Zylman, who recently retired.

Cape comes to Lakeland from a highly-successful run as vice president of advancement at his alma mater, Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam. Cape lead an increase in Wayland's annual fund from $240,000 to over $1 million, increased alumni participation by 20 percent and successfully directed a $20 million capital campaign and Wayland's Sesquicentennial Celebration.
"Lakeland has much to be proud of in its 143-year history, but the great thing is the college realizes it can do and be so much more," Cape said. "Lakeland's Sesquicentennial is only seven years away, and that will serve as a wonderful centerpiece to showcase what Lakeland, oftentimes quietly, has done for this region.
"I'm excited about helping Lakeland celebrate what it's accomplished by keeping the college growing and doing even more."
In 1993, Cape established Cape Enterprises, Ltd., which provides fundraising services for non-profit organizations. Based in Lake Bluff, Ill., clients have included schools, hospitals and fine arts organizations throughout the Midwest.
"As we put the finishing touches on our very successful Legacy for Lakeland campaign, we needed to bring to Lakeland someone to help us keep looking forward and capitalize on our momentum," said Lakeland President Stephen Gould. "Jim is that person. His impressive track record of success and our goals for growing Lakeland will prove to be a perfect match."
Cape attended Drake University on an athletic scholarship and graduated in 1973 with a business administration degree. He earned a master's degree in administrative leadership in 1977 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Cape has worked in a number of different roles in higher education and development. He got his start as associate dean of admissions at Ripon College and served as director of admissions and financial aid at Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
He was director of corporate & foundation relations with the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Interlochen, Mich., director of development at Lake Forest Academy, vice president of development for the Newberry Library in Chicago and a senior consultant with Sumnar Rahr & Co. in Chicago.
For just over a decade, Cape was an affiliate consultant with Growth Design Corp. of Milwaukee, which offers consulting services for annual fund and direct marketing.
Cape and his wife, Helene, will reside in Plymouth.
