Honors program to host Atrocity Awareness Week, April 16-19

Students in Lakeland College's Honors Program "Truth and Reconciliation after Atrocities" class are sponsoring an "Atrocity Awareness Week" from April 16-19 as their semester project.

Students enrolled in the honors course, taught by associate professor of history Krista Feinberg, have organized a week of activities and fundraising to bring attention to atrocities in the world.

On Tuesday, April 17, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and from 4-7 p.m., the class will conduct an interactive exhibit about Restavek, Haitian children in slavery today. Lakeland students contacted the Restavek Freedom Foundation and are using their guidance in constructing an exhibit.

Visitors will be able to simulate activities that these slaves are forced to do, including carrying water, verbal abuse, examples of implements to beat the children and videos of children's responses. The final station is the "hope" station where participants can record their reactions.

The exhibit will be in Bossard Hall on the second floor of the Younger Family Campus Center on Lakeland's main campus.

On Thursday, April 19, at 6:30 p.m., Michelle Fromm, a student in the class, will do a reading of a fiction piece she is writing about a girl in Vietnam who experienced atrocities.

All events are free and the community is invited to attend to learn more.
