56th Lakeland Music Camp has record number

A record number of 354 music students will participate in one of Lakeland College's oldest institutions - the college's 56th Music Camp.

Campers from middle school and high school will participate July 21-28 in band, choir, orchestra and piano ensembles. Each camper takes a daily music theory class, sings in Camp Choir and chooses two elective courses, including yoga, beginning piano, brass choir, jazz improvisation, hip hop dance and many more.

The camp was established in 1956 by Lakeland professors Eddie Thiessen and Henry Ellerbusch, who observed a need among youth in eastern Wisconsin for summer music activities. Today, Russell Pettitt, Lakeland's director of bands, serves as Music Camp Director, and Megan Pettitt, adjunct instructor of music, serves as camp registrar.

"It's amazing the number of Lakeland alumni who got their first exposure to the college by attending its summer music camp," Russell Pettitt said. "We are proud to continue this tradition."

Campers study a comprehensive curriculum including music theory and choir for everyone that's mixed with a variety of fun activities.

"Music Camp is one of the most exciting parts of the summer at Lakeland," said Meg Albrinck, Lakeland's vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. "Through their shared love for all things musical, the camp's faculty and young participants bring a wonderful energy and positive spirit to campus. We are thrilled that more families than ever are supporting the arts through participation in Lakeland's camp."

Activities during the week also include a concert by the popular Sheboygan-based group The Water Street Hot Shots, a camp faculty recital, student honors recital competition, a dance, chamber music performances and the final Camp Choir performance in the Wehr Center Field House for family and friends.
