Lakeland men's tennis squad picked 10th in NAC preseason poll

WAUKESHA - The Lakeland College men's tennis team has been picked to finish tenth in the 2013 Northern Athletic Conference preseason poll of league coaches released by the conference.

Lakeland received 20 points in the poll, finishing one point behind Rockford (Ill.) College for ninth in the conference. Defending NAC champion Concordia University Wisconsin has been picked as the conference favorite, finishing first in the poll with 92 points and five first-place votes.

Concordia Wisconsin and Edgewood College split the conference's 10 first-place votes, with Edgewood coming in second with 87 points. Milwaukee School of Engineering was third with 77 points, followed by Aurora (Ill.) University and Dominican (Ill.) University to round out the top five.

The league's six-team tournament will open April 30 at the sites of the third and fourth-seeded teams, while Lakeland will host the final two rounds on Saturday, May 4, at The Sports Core in Kohler. The tournament champion receives the NAC's automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

Lakeland finished 0-9 in the NAC last season to place tenth in the team standings. Second-year Lakeland Head Men's Tennis Coach Casey Carr is confident, though, that his team will be better this year.

"I'm guessing this will be the last year the coaches vote Lakeland to finish last for quite some time," said Carr. "Last year's team and this year's team are night and day different. We have a lot of new faces in our program this year that I am excited to have. We have a lot more depth than what we've had in the past. It's going to be a fun year."

The Muskies open their 2013 season on March 30 against Calvin (Mich.) College at The Sports Core.
