Master of Arts in Counseling
Degree Requirements
The Master of Arts in Counseling degree consists of the following courses:
Core Courses - 19 credits
All courses listed are 3 semester hours, unless otherwise indicated
CN 701 Introduction to Counseling and Human Development
CN 702 Counseling Process and Helping Relationships
CN 703 Career Development
CN 704 Assessment in Counseling
CN 705 Counseling in Groups
CN 706 Social and Cultural Issues (2 sem. hrs.)
CN 708 Research and Evaluation (2 sem. hrs.)
Each student will select an area of emphasis. This selection must take place by the time the student applies for admission to candidacy - no earlier than 15 credits and no later than 22 credits into the program.
PK - 12 School Counseling Emphasis - 8 semester hours
CN 711 Counseling in Schools
CN 712 Consultation and Outreach for Counselors (2 sem. hrs.)
CN 713 Field Work in School Counseling
Community Counseling Emphasis - 7 semester hours
CN 712 Consultation and Outreach for Counselors (2 sem. hrs.)
CN 720 Community Counseling (2 sem. hrs.)
CN 722 Field Work in Community Counseling
*CN 760 Contemporary Topics: Counseling Theories
*Students in the Community Counseling Emphasis who wish to be licensed by
the Wisconsin Department of Licensing and Regulation must take this course.

Students will also take elective courses, which provide opportunities to gain
knowledge and skills in areas of specific interest. Following is a listing of some
of the elective courses that have been offered - new courses are added
under the topics of Contemporary Topics to meet the need for new areas of
information.
ELECTIVES
Four to five additional semester hours from the following:
Students in the PK - 12 School Counseling and Higher Education emphases
must take four semester hours of electives; students in the Community
Counseling emphasis must take five semester hours of electives.

CN 760 Contemporary Topics - Conflict Resolution (2 sem. hrs.)

CULMINATING EXPERIENCE (11 semester hours)
Each student will finish the Master of Arts in Counseling degree by
participating in a hands-on, educational experience at an appropriate site.
