Alumni Spotlight - Mary Kelly `86

Mary Kelly

Have you ever been strained for time and at a loss as to what to prepare for supper? Well Mary Kelly solves this problem by saving time and money for many people everyday. Mary is a personal chef through her very own Simply Delicious Personal Chef Service. Working professionals and families are able to eat healthy, delicious meals in their homes without having to ask "What's for dinner?"

Mary didn't always know what she wanted to do for a career. Mary graduated with a business administration degree from Lakeland but did not put it into practice for a few years. She spent ten years as a stay-at-home mom before venturing out into the work world as a production assistant in the shipping/trucking department and filling various costumer service positions with insurance companies.

Mary says the Lakeland community has prepared her for her career, and life in general, by teaching her to question and think about what she was learning. "I was able to formulate my own ideas and put what I learned into practice" says Mary. Dr. Richard Leach was one of the professors who enabled her to think on her own. Mary praises Dr. Leach, "I always found his classes insightful and thoroughly enjoyed the discussions; his office was always open to those of us who had questions or wanted to take the topic to the next level." Dr. Leach is Mary's favorite professor and continues to stay in touch with him by exchanging Christmas cards.

Mary's favorite memory of Lakeland is what occurred in her classes with her favorite professor, "It always seemed that my classes with Dr. Leach started in the middle of my favorite soap opera, Days of our Lives, and I remember rushing into his class several times. He would just smile and ask if it was a good episode."

Mary, her husband Jason, and their son who is a sophomore in high school, live near Hilbert, WI. They also have two daughters that are both freshmen in college. Mary and her husband have many hobbies, "We enjoy flying private planes, jeeping in the Northwoods of Wisconsin and Michigan's U.P., reading and watching the wildlife in our backyard." Mary also enjoys fitness walking and is proud of her recent completion of the 13.1 mile Fox Cities ½ Marathon through the Competitive Power Walk Event. Another, more obvious of Mary's hobbies is cooking. Mary says that when she is reading it's usually about the past, "I'm a bit of a History nerd!" Mary enjoys learning all together and wishes she could return to Lakeland to sit in class and listen to absorb many more interesting things.
