Lakeland College Choir Hits the Road

Alumni Association - posted on 3/25/2010

It is spring again, which means it's time for the Lakeland College choir tour, a tradition that dates back over 60 years.

Janet L. Herrick, Professor of Music and Director of the College Choirs and Handbells, looks forward to the tour each year. "It's a wonderful opportunity for our students, and a nice event for alumni, who love to hear and see the choir. The concert choir sings in a variety of languages and styles, and we always end the concert by singing the Alma Mater." Students in the choir represent a great cross-section of the Lakeland campus, with every division represented as well as several student-athletes and other multi-talented individuals.

The choir tour was originally a trip made by the men's choir, The Troubadors, many years ago. According to Herrick, that group traveled around in a covered pick-up. Transportation has been improved since those early days, but the choir still relies on the kindness of individuals in the communities that are visited. Church members where the choir performs open up their homes and provide hospitality to the Lakeland students.

Rich Christensen, Associate Professor of Religion and Director of the Mission House Center, organizes the tour each year by contacting UCC churches and offering to have our students come and sing. The tour alternates every other year between in-state venues and out-of-state. This year's tour is in-state. "The churches are always very eager to have us," he said. "Our choir is so good!"

The schedule for the choir tour follows. Our hope is that if you are an alumnus of Lakeland College and you live near any of these locations, you will take advantage of the opportunity to hear the choir and re-connect with your Lakeland College family.
