Muskie Softball Cruises to Win Over Finlandia
Athletics - posted on 4/2/2006
The Lakeland softball team picked up its third win of the season with an 11-3 victory over Finlandia on Sunday afternoon. The second game of the schedule doubleheader was called in the second inning due to rain.
Freshman Kayla Nissen pitched three strong innings, giving up three runs on five hits to get the win. Sophomore Rachel Griesbach tossed three scoreless innings in relief to get the save.
"With Kayla and Rachel, we have a nice 1-2 punch on the mound," said head coach Chad Buchmann. "It was nice to see Rachel pitch effectively to get her first save. Having just come off pre-season knee surgery, she really shut down the Lions' bats."
Junior Katie Yeager and freshman Rebecca Schuettpelz each went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in to lead Lakeland.
Senior Valerie Barlett also went 2-for-4 and has now gotten a hit in all 12 games this season.
"Everyone hit well today and we had some great heads up base running," said Buchmann. "We have to win at home this year and we did that today."
The Muskies are in action again on Tuesday when Maranatha Baptist travels to Lakeland for a doubleheader scheduled for 3 p.m.
