Athletics - posted on 5/5/2006
The No. 2 seed Lakeland has a short stay in the 2006 Lake Michigan Conference tournament, falling to Concordia and Marian to be ousted from the tournament.
The Muskies fell 5-3 to Concordia in the first game of the day. The Muskies had a 3-2 lead going into the top of the seventh inning when Concordia put together a three run rally. Sophomore Rachel Griesbach took the game one loss.
In game two of the tournament, the Muskies faced Wisconsin Lutheran. Senior Monica Hetzel's two-run home run in the sixth inning powered the Muskies past Wisconsin Lutheran 3-2.
In the night cap, facing elimination, the Muskies fell to the No. 4 seeded Sabres of Marian College 5-1.
"Rachel (Griesbach) ran out of energy and so did her arm," said head coach Chad Buchmann. "We brought in Kayla (Nissen) and she did well. We hit well the entire day, but just hit the ball right at them."
The Muskies finished the season with a record of 18-21, 12-4 in the Lake Michigan Conference.
