The Lakeland Muskies women's tennis program dropped two hard fought matches on Saturday, Sept. 24 in Fond du Lac. The Muskies lost to Elmhurst College 8-1 and to LMC foe Marian 5-4.
"The standout for the day for Lakeland was our newcomer at #2, Sarah Czuratis, who won our only match against Elmhurst and was one of our three winners, along with Meggan Saak and Andrea Schuchart, in singles against Marian," said head coach Michael Devaney. "The number three doubles team of Natsumi Kobayashi and freshman Brittani Kazik had contributed an 8-2 victory earlier."
In the match against Marian three Muskies emerged victorious; Czuratis (6-3, 6-3), Saak (7-6 (4), 6-3) and Schuchart (6-3, 6-3). In doubles play Kobayashi and Kazik teamed up for a 8-2 victory over Meredith Bushy and Alicia Klaus.
"Lakeland played better in both matches today that we had in our earlier two matches," said Devaney. "In the conference match versus Marian we needed one more victory. Unfortunately, we lost each of the three close matches - two 8- 6 doubles matches and a three set loss at # 5 singles.
In the second match of the day against Elmhurst the lone victory for Lakeland came courtesy of Czuratis. In doubles the Muskies played solid against Elmhurst with Lisa Hentges and Mary Claire Stockman falling 9-8 to Emmy Odean and Sabrina Ruff. Czuratis and Chizuru Masuda dropped a close match as well, losing 8-4 to Sarah Stachnik and Margie Leahu.
The women's tennis team will resume play on Tuesday, Sept. 27 when they travel to River Forest, Ill. to take on Dominican.
