Baseball Team Falls In Season Opener

Athletics - posted on 3/11/2006

The Lakeland College baseball team dropped its 2006 season opener, a 9-6 loss to Westminster College on its spring trip in Fulton, Mo.

The Muskies rallied from a 3-1 deficit to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth thanks in part of a two-run home run from junior Mitch Heinemeyer. But Westminster took a lasting lead in the bottom of the fifth on a grand slam. Lakeland scored twice in the top of the ninth, but fell short.

Freshman Jake Van Kamp took the pitching loss in relief for Lakeland. Starter Nate Brusewitz, a sophomore, pitched four innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits while fanning one and walking one.

Heinemeyer was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and was hit twice. Freshman Shawn Loch was 4-5 with an RBI, while senior Paul Daniels and junior Brett Nelson were both 2-4.

Lakeland plays Westminster again Sunday at noon.
