The Lakeland Muskies advanced to the Lake Michigan Conference Tournament Championship round after defeating Marian, 3-0 (30-18, 30-21 and 30-23) on Friday, Nov. 4. The Muskies came out playing as a team and were able to control the play all evening long.
"I thought it was the most our team has played together as a unit," said head coach Chad Schreiber. "There were times this season you could tell the girls were not all playing on the same page. Tonight they were all on the same page playing as a unit of six."
The Muskies combined for a total of 54 kills, 49 assists, 46 digs, 10 blocks and six service aces.
"The team played as such a unit tonight that I think we didn't really have any standout players," said Schreiber. "That's what was great about tonight. The fact we had no standout player was the reason we won."
Senior Lana Neuman did lead the team in assists with 47 and in digs with 13. Senior Sarah Buechel tallied 11 digs and fellow senior Danielle Duranceau netted 12 kills, while sophomore Ashley Domask also had 12 kills.
"Tonight was awesome, said senior Lana Neuman. "We played as a team through the entire match, we didn't give up runs, we served received well, we served well, we played as a team and worked really hard and that's what allowed us to win tonight."
With the win the Muskies will face Maranatha Baptist in the LMC Tournament Championship on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 7:00p.m. Maranatha advanced to the championship by coming back from a, 2-0, deficit to win, 3-2, over Concordia in the first semifinal match of the evening.
"If we can serve as well as we've been serving the second half of this season that will really limit what they can do," said Schreiber, when asked about matching up against Maranatha. "If they are in system, they have two of the best players in the conference and we are going to have our hands full."
The Muskies and Maranatha met twice during the regular season with the teams splitting the series, 1-1.
