Muskies Finish Spring Trip at 2-7
Athletics - posted on 3/17/2006
After a slow start on its spring trip to Tucson, Ariz., the Lakeland softball team won three of its last six games to finish with a 3-7 record for the week.
The Muskies dropped their first four games before their bats came alive. They won the next two over Dawson and Lake Forest, 9-6 and 7-5. They also added another win the next day against Finlandia, 5-4.
"We got off to a sluggish start with our hitting," said head coach Chad Buchmann, "and we ran into some pretty good teams."
On the first day, the Muskies dropped their first two games, 3-0 and 9-0, to Minot State and Lake Forest, respectively, and then were defeated on the third day by La Roche, 8-1, and Minot State, 14-0.
Lakeland broke out of its slump in the Dawson game, scoring nine runs on 12 hits against the Buccaneers. Freshman pitcher Kayla Nissen got her first victory, giving up six runs on 11 hits while striking out six.
The hitting continued as the Muskies buried Lake Forest with sophomore Pam Valukas leading the way with two hits, two runs scored and two runs batted in.
The next day, Valukas and sophomore Kourtney Peters, who hit .294 on the week, both hit home runs to lead the Muskies past Finlandia.
Senior Valerie Barlett finished the week with a .467 batting average and a .484 on-base percentage.
"Val is a tough out," said Buchmann. "If you can get her out you're a really good pitcher, but you really have to work."
Valukas finished her spring trip with a .346 average and team highs with six runs scored and six RBI. Nissen finished the week with a 3-6 record on the mound with 27 strikeouts in 47.1 innings pitched.
The Muskies have a week and a half off before resuming their season on April 1 at home against UW-Stevens Point.
