Lakeland dropped in season opener to number two Whitewater

Lakeland College opened its 2006 football season with a 75-14 loss to UW-Whitewater, the nation's second ranked team, Saturday night in Whitewater.

Penalties and mistakes plagued the Muskies throughout the game. Lakeland had 17 penalties and four fumbles which set the tone.

"Whitewater is No. 2 in Division III because they don't make mistakes, and we made too many tonight," said Lakeland head coach Jim Zebrowski. "The difference is they catch the ball. They don't get penalties. Two years ago when we played them, we stayed with them because we didn't make those kinds of mistakes. You can't play a team like them and make mistakes and expect to win."

Junior wide receiver MacArthur White got the Muskies on the board with 6:47 left in the first quarter on a 77-yard shovel pass from junior quarterback Brad Wilk. Kicker Billy Hughes picked up the extra point to put Lakeland within a touchdown of Whitewater, 14-7.

However, it was all Whitewater until Lakeland got back on the board with a scoring drive late in the fourth quarter. Wilk connected with freshman Isiah Calhoun on third and seven for 33 yards to keep a drive alive, and two plays later Calhoun caught a 34-yard pass from Wilk for Lakeland's other touchdown. Hughes again added the extra point to give the Muskies their last score of the game.

"Both Isiah and MacArthur did outstanding and our offensive line was solid," said Zebrowski.

Wilk was 17 for 42 with 276 yards, two TDs and three interceptions.

"I thought Wilk did a good job considering that is only his second time starting," said Zebrowski. "He was solid and threw the ball well."

The Muskies had 352 offensive yards, but gave up 449 to the Warhawks. Lakeland did, however, hold All-American running back Justin Beaver to 52 yards on 11 carries.

Lakeland returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. in its home opener against Carthage at Taylor Field.
