Lakeland narrowly defeats MacMurray

The Lakeland College football team remained perfect in Illini-Badger Football Conference play by narrowly escaping with a 24-16 win over MacMurray Saturday at Freesen Field in Jacksonville, Ill.
The win sets up a showdown next Saturday, Oct. 21, at Lakeland with unbeaten and co-IBFC leader Concordia, Wis., in the annual Cheese Bowl, with the winner gaining sole possession of first place with two weeks to play. The game, Lakeland's homecoming, is set for 1 p.m.
The Muskies (4-3, 4-0 IBFC) held the Highlanders (1-5, 1-3 IBFC) to just 135 total yards, and made enough key plays in the second half to seal a victory.
Fittingly, Lakeland's defense scored the game's first points when senior defensive lineman Shane Schrimpf sacked MacMurray senior quarterback Mike Schmidtke in the end zone for safety at the end of the first quarter of the game to put the Muskies up 2-0.
The offense, which failed to score on its first three possessions despite starting in MacMurrary terriroty, was able to build on the momentum of the defense on the Muskies' next possession. Junior quarterback Brad Wilk found junior wide receiver MacArthur White in the end zone for a 23-yard TD to make it 8-0 early in the second quarter.
Lakeland scored again with 5:44 left in the first half when Wilk found senior wide receiver Ricardo Brown for a 52-yard TD play, but the Muskies couldn't convert on the two-point attempt.
Lakeland had a golden opportunity late in the first half and twice had first and goal at the one, but had to settle for a field goal as sophomore Billy Hughes delivered on a 22-yard try to give Lakeland a 17-0 halftime lead.
The game's momentum took a huge shift in MacMurray's favor when sophomore Nate Robinson blocked a Hughes punt and sophomore Antwain Jones returned it for the Highlanders first score of the game with five minutes left in the third quarter. Schmidtke would get the two-point conversion to cut the gap to 17-8.
The Highlanders picked off a pass by freshman QB Jacob Heinemeyer on Lakeland's next series, and seven plays later senior running back Peter Ereg scored on a three-yard TD run. Schmidtke found Robinson in the end zone for the two-point conversion cutting Lakeland's lead to one at 17-16.
But the Muskies would secure their win with an 11-play touchdown drive at the end of the fourth quarter as freshman fullback Dominique Collins scored with 19 seconds left on a two-yard run. Hughes' extra point cemented the Muskies' 24-16 win.
Collins had another solid day, as he ran the ball 32 times for 111 yards. White was in his element this week with four receptions for 85 yards and a 40-yard kickoff return. Wilk was 12 for 26 for 218 yards, two TDs and one interception. Lakeland had 364 total yards.
Sophomore linebacker John Wagner paced the Muskies defense on the day with 10 total tackles and two of Lakeland's five sacks.
