Muskies Douse Inferno, 3-0

A strong start earned the women's volleyball team (14-13, 5-3 NAC) a commanding win, 3-0, over Alverno College in Northern Athletics Conference action on Wednesday, Oct. 18, in Milwaukee, Wis.

In game one, the Muskies blanked the Inferno 30-7 on a .469 hitting percentage, one of their best of the season. From then on the squad never looked back, going on to win the next two games 30-19, 30-14.

"It was a match where we were able to use different line-up combinations," said head coach Chad Schreiber. "It was nice to get started on a win streak after our Texas tournament."

Junior middle hitter Shelly Bruni led the Muskies in kills with eight, followed by junior outside hitter Ashley Domask and freshman middle hitter Kaylyn Kasper with seven kills apiece. Jessica Sparling boosted the defense with a team-high 11 digs, while also recording 33 assists and five kills.

"Jess Sparling played good defense tonight," Schreiber said. "Jessica Keller has also been getting more playing time and is doing very well."

Keller, a freshman middle hitter, tallied six kills in two games and also had two block assists.

Next up for the Muskies will be a home match-up against Concordia University Chicago, currently second place in the NAC, on Thursday, Oct. 19.

Although CUC could be a tough opponent for the Lakeland, Schreiber was confident that the way his squad played Wednesday could be used as a good indicator for their level of play for Thursday's match.

"The girls appear ready to play a good match tomorrow night," he said.

Game time is set for 7 p.m. in the Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
