Muskies Unable to Sneak Past Defending LMC Champs

Athletics - posted on 4/10/2006

The Lakeland softball team dropped a pair of games to defending Lake Michigan Conference champion Edgewood, 8-4 and 10-2.

The Eagles scored five runs in the first inning of the opening game off of Lakeland starter Kayla Nissen, and although Nissen settled in after that, the Muskies couldn't recover.

The second game proved to be much closer, as the teams were tied at two heading into fifth inning, but Edgewood busted loose for four runs in the inning and added four more in the sixth to end the game.

Senior Monica Hetzel went 3-for-5 on the day, including a solo home run and a sacrifice fly in the second game.

Fellow senior Valerie Barlett, who had her 17-game hitting streak snapped on Sunday, began a new streak by hitting safely in both games on Monday.

The Muskies are on the road again for their next doubleheader, which is at Concordia on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
