Muskies Split at Edgewood, Take Season Series From Defending Champs
Athletics - posted on 4/22/2006
Just a day after posting a rather surprising win over Edgewood, the Lakeland baseball team coolly finished the job, splitting a doubleheader to take the season series from the current conference leader and defending conference champs.
Lakeland dropped Game 1, 12-2, but the Muskies got a complete game performance from junior Zach Schmitz to win the second game, 4-3.
Schmitz gave up just three runs on eight hits to the Lake Michigan Conference's most prolific offense only a day after Kris Saiberlich went the distance in Friday's 4-2 win over the Eagles.
Senior Matt Andrews went 3-for-4 in the game with two doubles, one run batted in, and two runs scored, including the eventual game winner in the fifth inning on a Shawn Loch single.
The Muskies have won six of their last seven LMC games, improving their conference record to 8-7 and now sit just three games behind Edgewood and just two games behind second place Marian, whom Lakeland will face three times this week, including a doubleheader at home on Saturday.
Lakeland will travel to Waukesha on Tuesday to face Carroll at 3 p.m.
