Muskies Swept by Second Place Marian

Athletics - posted on 4/29/2006

The Lakeland baseball team dropped a Saturday doubleheader to Lake Michigan Conference rival Marian, 8-4 and 5-3.

Marian's 2-7 hitters went a combined 8-for-20 against the Muskies in Game 1, accounting for all runs batted in and all but one run scored.

Mitch Heinemeyer and Josh Henschel both hit home runs for Lakeland in the loss.

Lakeland got a superb performance from pitcher Zach Schmitz in the second game. Schmitz kept the Muskies in the game despite a quiet offense, scattering nine hits over eight innings and giving up only three runs.

Down 3-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Schmitz was let off the hook when Heinemeyer knocked a two-out, two-run double into the right field corner to tie the game. It was Heinemeyer's 17th double of the season, just one off the school single season record.

But a sacrifice fly by Josh Wolter off of reliever Dan Rhodes put Marian up to stay in the top of the ninth.

Lakeland falls to 8-10 in the LMC and 12-23 overall. They still hold a slim chance of making the LMC tournament and need to sweep Wisconsin Lutheran next week to hold onto that chance.

They will host their final non-conference doubleheader of the season on Sunday as Carthage visits the Lakeland campus at noon.
