The Lakeland women's basketball team (4-2, 2-0 NAC) notched another win in Northern Athletics Conference play with a 60-50 victory over Concordia University Chicago on Tuesday, Dec. 5, in River Forest, Ill.
Although the Muskies started off slow with more turnovers than points at the 15 minute mark, the squad soon found their footing on offense aided by a 46 percent field-goal average to put them up 30-22 at halftime.
"We have some turnover issues to iron out," said head coach April Arvan. "I was surprised we were beating ourselves like that, but we did shoot the ball and rebound very well."
The Cougars would shorten the Muskies' lead in the last three minutes of the game, pulling within seven points on a four-point play by Alison Sansone, who was fouled in the process of making one of her four 3-pointers of the night.
However, Lakeland senior guard Amanda Thielmann countered with a driving lay-up to keep the Muskies on top 56-48. The team went on to seal the game at the free throw line, hitting four of their last five attempts with just over one minute to play.
Lakeland's senior inside game led the team in scoring, as Jenna Boehm recorded a team-high 20 points, including knocking down six of her seven attempts from the foul line, while Danielle Duranceau recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
"We need Danielle to have a double-double every game," Arvan said. "It's something we've been talking about since the beginning of the season."
Arvan also credited the efforts of her bench players, as junior guard Brenda Paulson, freshman forward Emily Agner and Thielmann each scored six points.
"Our bench play shooting 50 percent was outstanding," she said. "At half time I told them they were producing and they continued to do so in the second half.
"Amanda having six points and six boards was also very helpful. That's what we need her to do all the time."
Although the Muskies finished with 24 turnovers to CUC's 18, partially due to the Cougar's stubborn half court trap, their accurate shooting prevented the miscues from causing too much damage.
"Our shooting percentage and rebounding were the keys to the game," Arvan said, as her team shot 42 percent and grabbed 14 more boards than the Cougars. "We get in situations where we just get so darn excited, which leads to turnovers. But, Concordia has a very good team with good players that will do some damage in the NAC."
Lakeland will finish out its December schedule without any home games, but Arvan feels tonight's road win will help her team adjust to playing away from their home court.
"It's tough to have all of December on the road," she said. "But, we tried to prepare for that by scheduling our scrimmages away and a game at Elmhurst early in our schedule."
The Muskies' next NAC game will take place on Saturday, Dec. 9, against Rockford College in Rockford, Ill. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
