The Lakeland men's basketball team (1-3, 1-1 NAC) registered its first win of the season with an 86-72 win over Northern Athletics Conference foe Concordia University Chicago (1-5, 0-3 NAC) on Wednesday, Dec. 6, in River Forest, Ill.

The win marks not only the first for Lakeland this season, but also the first for Kyle Brumett, in his debut season as a head coach.

"Everyone is used to winning," said Brumett of the victory. "The coaching staff is used to winning and the team is used to winning, so winning feels the way it's supposed to. We've had a tough schedule so far. We've played well for stretches, but could never put a whole game together until tonight."

The Muskies jumped out to an early 44-29 halftime lead over the Cougars. In the second half, Lakeland led by as many as 19 points and never surrendered the lead. The Muskies put together a solid game with a season-low 13 turnovers and out-rebounded the Cougars 40-27.

Sophomore Matt Rogers led the Muskies in scoring with 21 points. Junior Aaron Regal also put together a stellar game with 12 points, five assists and no turnovers, while junior Shane Grube collected 11 points.

"Aaron did a great job tonight," said Brumett. "He shot the ball well. He was aggressive. He made the plays."

Defensively, junior Danny Ehnert paced Lakeland with 13 rebounds. Freshman Phil Sontag again helped anchor the Muskies' defensive efforts.

"Phil is giving us some great minutes as his confidence is growing," said Brumett. "He's our best defender on the perimeter and he is playing within himself."

"A lot of guys didn't play well individually, but as a team they played better together," said Brumett.

The Muskies will be in action again on Saturday, Dec. 9, as they take on NAC foe Rockford College in Rockford, Ill. Game time is set for 4:15 p.m.
