Sophomore Matt Rogers game-high 23 points weren't enough to boost the Muskies as Lakeland men's basketball team fell to Northern Athletics Conference opponent Dominican, 73-72, on Saturday afternoon in River Forest, Ill..
The Muskies (8-9, 6-5 NAC) led the Stars (10-7, 7-4 NAC) the entire first half, at one point by as many as 16 points. Lakeland went into the break with a 42-29 advantage, shooting 52 percent for the half.
The second half was a different ball game, as the Stars came back to tie the game at 58 with just 6:30 left. The teams traded the lead back and forth over the rest of the game. Lakeland took a one point lead when Rogers nailed both of his free throws with just 11 seconds left. However, the Stars' Rashim Lettsome was fouled on a shot with no time left on the clock and made both of his free throws to give the Stars the victory.
The Stars out-rebounded the Muskies 21-14 in the second half also contributing to the loss.
"We just ran out of gas," said Lakeland head coach Kyle Brumett. "We are having trouble closing out second halves. We need to figure out what we are doing in the first half that we are not in the second half."
"One thing about losing is it keeps your attention on trying to improve and sometimes winning masks a bigger problem," said Brumett. "We could have won last week in overtime against Marian and we could have won this week, however we still would have to figure out why we can't close out games after having large first half leads."
Kris Saiberlich reached double digits for the Muskies, scoring 14 points and adding three assists. Junior Danny Ehnert led the Muskies on the glass with nine rebounds and also added eight points.
Lettsome led the Stars with 18 points, while Mike Haiduc added 12 points and Jose Garcia had 11 points.
The Muskies return home to play on Tuesday against NAC foe Concordia University Chicago. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
