The Lakeland men's tennis team (3-6, 2-3 NAC) split a pair of Northern Athletics Conference matches on Saturday, Apr. 21, defeating Dominican University, 6-3, after falling to Concordia University Chicago, 6-3, in River Forest, Ill.
Sophomore Matt Rutlin and freshman Andre Glass continued to dominate at No. 1 doubles with a commanding 8-1 win over Dominican's Alfred Lobato and Frank Napolitano. The pair also tallied one of the Muskies' three match wins in the squad's loss to Concordia, defeating the Cougars' No. 1 pair, 8-6.
Rutlin and Glass also tallied solid wins in their respective singles matches, as Glass swept the No. 1 match, 6-0, 6-0, while Rutlin won his No. 2 match, 6-1, 6-2. Freshmen Drazen Cvijanovic and Andrew Waters also pulled out tight wins in their singles matches, as Cvijanovic downed Joe Segreti, 6-2, 7-5, while Waters' No. 6 match went to three sets after an off second set, 6-4, 2-6. However, he was able to mount a come-back in the third set to finish it 6-1.
Waters teamed up with junior Mark Meade in No. 3 doubles to record the sixth Lakeland match win over the Stars, 8-5.
Although the Muskies could only pull two more match wins out of their fight with the Cougars besides Rutlin and Glass' No. 1 doubles match, Glass continued to show his strength by also taking a close No. 1 singles match for the squad's only win in singles match play. After splitting the first two sets, 6-2, 6-7 and dropping the tie-breaker in the second set, 7-3, Glass came back to take the third set, 10-5 to earn the win.
Freshman Dartanian Taylor and Cvijanovic rounded out Lakeland's match wins by taking the No. 2 doubles match, 8-5, over Concordia's Mike Stricker and Michael Schubert.
