Lakeland Sweeps Doubleheader Over Nichols

Athletics - posted on 3/14/2007

The Lakeland baseball team continued to bounce back from losing its first three games by sweeping a doubleheader over Nichols College on Wednesday, 4-2 and 16-3.

In Game One, Mitch Heinemeyer went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run and all four runs batted in to lead Lakeland (3-3) over the Bison.

Nichols opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first, but the Muskies answered with a run of their own on Heinemeyer's first double in the bottom of the inning.

Lakeland went ahead 2-1 in the third after Heinemeyer's second double plated Tyler Schmitt, who scored three of the Muskies' four runs.

Nichols tied the game in the fourth, but Heinemeyer's towering blast over a 30-foot fence in left field broke the tie in the fifth gave the Muskies the lead and the eventual win.

Jake Van Camp pitched a complete game, giving up just two runs--one earned--on seven hits to get his first win of the season.

Game Two saw an offensive explosion by the Muskies, who were sparked by an aggressive baserunning attack that included seven stolen bases, six coming in their eight-run second inning.

Mitch Heinemeyer, Tyler Schmitt, Alex Grant, Zach Hilbert, Jacob Heinemeyer and Jake Schoemann all had two RBIs apiece, and Shawn Loch worked around a shaky first inning to pitch five innings and grab the win.

Lakeland will face Wilmington tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 9 a.m. as they continue their spring trip.
