Despite a neck-and-neck score throughout game three, the Lakeland College men's volleyball team, ranked fifth in the nation, downed a No. 16 Marquette squad, 3-0 (30-20, 30-22, 30-28), in Wisconsin Volleyball Conference match play on Thursday, March 1, in Lakeland's Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium. The win allowed the Muskies to move into first place in the WVC, as both teams were undefeated leading up to the match.

The Muskies (20-2, 5-0 WVC) started off the night strong, hitting 58 percent as a team in game one. The squad continued its offensive prowess into game two and was able to recover from several errors to put the Golden Eagles away in game three.

Senior outside hitter Matt Martin led the Muskies' offensive drive with 15 kills, followed closely by junior middle hitter Jared Rohland's 14 kills on 77 percent hitting. Rohland and Martin also contributed in the blocking column, tallying three and two blocks respectively. Sophomore setter Matt Clemens also made significant contributions with 43 assists, 12 digs, four blocks and two aces.

"I'm really pleased with how we got better with our serving as the match went on," said head coach Chad Schreiber. "Hopefully it is a sign of better things to come. There were times where I thought we should have turned momentum into bigger point runs, but overall we had a pretty complete effort."

Lakeland will continue its season this weekend at the Hawkeye Spring Classic in Iowa City, Iowa. Match times TBA.
