Men's Volleyball Scores Big Victory over Marquette

The Lakeland College men's volleyball team tallied a key victory over Wisconsin Volleyball Conference foe Marquette, 3-1 (30-27, 28-30, 30-20, 30-22), on Thursday, Mar. 22, in Milwaukee, Wis.

The win helped the Muskies (22-3) move to 7-1 in the WVC, giving them a chance to win the conference outright is they can defeat current conference leader UW-Oshkosh on Thursday, Mar. 29.

"I don't think there is a tougher place to play in the conference than at Marquette," said head coach Chad Schreiber. "It is such a unique set-up and confined area that if there is a home-court advantage - they have it. To get a win there is a big deal."

Although the squad was frustrated by the Golden Eagles in the first two games, winning the first by a slim 30-27 and dropping the second, 28-30, the Muskies were able to surge ahead to take the third and fourth games with authority.

"The first two games really had moments of brutal play for both teams that frustrated us long before it should have," Schreiber said. "I was happy to see our team settle down and regain our composure to put together a great finish to the match. We were down eight points in the fourth game, but put together a couple of four point runs to push ahead. I hope it will be a learning experience we can draw on later."

Senior outside hitter Matt Martin led Lakeland's offensive drive with an impressive 23 kills, while also adding 12 digs and five blocks. Junior middle hitter Jared Rohland also provided a double-digit effort in kills with 10 and added eight blocks and three digs. Sophomore setter Matt Clemens put up 51 assists and played solid defense with nine digs and five blocks while junior defensive specialist Shawn Voelz tallied 14 digs and one service ace.

The Muskies will be back at Marquette this Saturday, Mar. 24, for their second Midwest 10 Tournament date of the season. The squad will kick off the tournament with Notre Dame at 9 a.m., followed by Ball State at 10:10 a.m. and Northern Illinois at 11:30 a.m. The morning's matches will determine the seedings for the second half of tournament play in the afternoon.
