Softball Splits Two Games in Fourth Day of Tucson Tourney

The Lakeland College softball team remained at a steady .500 after splitting two games during its fourth day of action at its spring break tournament in Tucson, Ariz., dropping a 5-2 decision to Colorado School of the Mines and defeating Monmouth College, 6-2, on Thursday, Mar. 15.

The Muskies (4-4) hung tough in their loss to Colorado School of the Mines, as freshman pitcher Sara Roberts and freshman reliever Cassie Felton both delivered strong games from the mound.

"Their bats were smoking hot," said head coach Chad Buchmann of the Muskies' opponent. "They were definitely one of the better hitting teams we have seen."

However, the squad was fortunate to find itself the stronger hitting team in their win over Monmouth, as freshman second baseman KC Blahnik tallied an inside the park home run in the fourth inning, while senior catcher Katie Yeager and junior third baseman Kourtney Peters both recorded doubles in the game. Junior Jenny Zimmerman recorded the win from the mound for the Muskies, aided by Roberts in relief.

"Jenny pitched awesome with good control," Buchmann said. "We were also aggressive on offense and Elisa (Waltz) was able to steal some bases."

The Muskies will wrap up their final two games of the tournament tomorrow, first facing off with Kalamazoo College at 10 a.m. before taking on University of New England at noon for the second time during the tournament.

"Our goal is to come back with a winning record," Buchmann said. "We're looking really good going into the last two games and hopefully we can accomplish that."
