Softball Wraps Up Arizona Tourney at .500

The Lakeland College softball team met its goal of leaving its spring break tournament in Tucson, Ariz. with a .500 record, splitting the final two games of the tournament on Friday, Mar. 16, defeating Kalamazoo College, 10-9, before falling to University of New England 12-1.

"We developed some consistency with stealing bases and bunting and hitting well enough, but we never really hit sky-high as far as our potential," said head coach Chad Buchmann. "But, some of our freshman really stepped up and showed what they can do, like KC Blahnik and Sara Roberts."

Roberts combined with fellow freshman pitcher Cassie Felton to take out Kalamazoo in game one, but the intense Arizona heat proved too much for the Muskies (5-5) to overcome in the second game. Freshman Amber Haese and junior Jenny Zimmerman took the loss on the mound to University of New England, whom the Muskies defeated, 7-3 earlier in the week.

"The second and third innings took too long," Buchmann said. "They took about an hour each because there were too many walks and we were just drained from playing all week."

Freshman Sara Mallion tallied the Muskies solo RBI of the game, sending junior right fielder Rebecca Schuettpelz home on a double.

Lakeland will now delve into its Northern Athletics Conference schedule, starting with Dominican on Saturday, Mar. 24, in River Forest, Ill. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
