Muskies Swept in Doubleheader to Open Season

Athletics - posted on 3/11/2007

The Lakeland baseball team dropped a pair to Haverford to open its 2007 season, 5-2 and 8-1, in Fort Myers, Fla. on Sunday night.

The Muskies went up 2-0 in the opener off of an RBI double by Mitch Heinemeyer in the first inning and an RBI single by Zach Hilbert in the fourth, but a three-run fifth by the Fords turned out to be enough.

Senior Zach Schmitz pitched five innings, giving up three runs--two earned--on seven hits in taking the loss.

Haverford added two insurance runs off reliever Dan Rhodes in the seventh.

In Game Two, Haverford drove in three runs in the first inning off of starter Brett Anschutz to spark the 8-1 win.

Anschutz bounced back to strike out the side in the second but gave up three more in the third.

Adam Hablewitz's RBI single in the third was Lakeland's only run in the game.

Lakeland will continue their spring trip with a single game tomorrow against New England College at 9 a.m.
