The Lakeland College women's volleyball team remains unbeaten in the Northern Athletics Conference, as the Muskies cruised to victory over Maranatha Baptist, 3-0 (30-19, 30-19, 30-21) on Tuesday, Sept. 18.
"It was good to try some different line-up combinations that we use," said head coach Chad Schreiber, who sought to mix up different combinations of players on the floor. "But, it was frustrating that we weren't able to create the tempo we like to play with. We have been playing some of the top-ranked teams in the country for the past couple of weekends that play at a very fast pace, and we had trouble adjusting to the slower pace tonight. The ball was creating its own tempo for us."
Although the Muskies' (5-6, 3-0 NAC) scoring was diverse with the different line-up shifts, sophomore middle hitter Kim Linger and sophomore outside hitter Brittanie Paulus led the offensive drive with eight kills apiece, while senior outside hitter Ashley Domask tallied seven.
Paulus also shouldered the majority of the load on defense with 16 digs, followed by freshman setter Kristine Raeder and sophomore defensive specialist Tonia Strebelinski with 15 digs apiece. Raeder also racked up three service aces and 20 assists on offense, followed by sophomore setter Jessica Sparling with 17.
Lakeland will continue match play this weekend, traveling to another challenging tournament at Wheaton College.
"We open up with Carthage, who we just lost to last weekend," Schreiber said. "Wheaton, North Central and University of Chicago should also be tough. If we're going to be a good team this year and want to have a chance at making the NCAA Tournament, we need to start doing something positive this weekend outside of our conference."
Match time with Carthage is set for 3 p.m. in Wheaton, Ill.
