The Lakeland College baseball team split a pair of games in Northern Athletics Conference action with Concordia, Wis., capturing the first, 11-1, and dropping the second, 6-5, on Tuesday, Apr. 10, at Muskie Field.
Although Concordia got the scoring started right away in the top of the first in game one, tallying one run off of senior pitcher Zach Schmitz, who went the distance on the mound giving up six hits, the Muskies (8-12, 4-4 NAC) were able to shut the Falcons out for the rest of the game.
The home squad then jump-started their own offense in the second inning with one run to tie the game, then tacked on three more in the third, two more in the sixth. The Muskies then went on to wrap up the game in the bottom of the seventh with one run.
Seniors Tyler Schmitt, Mitch Heinemeyer and Brett Anschutz led the Muskies at bat, as Schmitt and Anschutz both went 2-3 with three runs scored and Heinemeyer went 2-4 with two runs scored.
In game two, the Falcons were the first to get on the board once again, scoring one run in the third and tacking on three in the third and two in the fifth. The Muskie bats finally woke up in the seventh inning with three runs scored to cut the lead in half, 6-3. In the ninth, the Muskies had a chance to make up the remainder of the deficit, but would fall just short with two runs scored to fall, 6-5.
Junior Kris Saiberlich pitched five innings for the Muskies, giving up five runs on eight hits. Sophomore Mike Phillips relived Saiberlich and gave up one run on one hit in two innings of work. Sophomore Dan Rhodes then came in for Phillips and pitched the final two innings, giving up no runs on just two hits.
On offense, the Muskies were lead by Sophomore Zach Hilbert who went a perfect 3-3 at the plate with one run scored.
The Muskies will continue NAC action this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders, traveling to Rockford College in Rockford, Ill., on Saturday, Apr. 14, then returning home to host Edgewood on Sunday, Apr. 15. Game time on both days is set for 12 p.m.
