The Lakeland College softball team improved its Northern Athletics Conference record to 9-1 with a pair of wins over Rockford College, 8-0, 11-1, on Saturday, Apr. 14, in Fond du Lac, Wis.
The Muskies (16-6) took control of both games from the start, scoring steadily throughout the first game and getting a big boost in the third inning after a three-RBI home run by junior designated hitter Pam Valukas. The rest of the squad also did well offensively, as freshman second baseman KC Blahnik led the team with three hits while junior right fielder Rebecca Schuettpelz, junior first baseman Allison Lock and Valukas all recorded two hits in the first game.
Freshman Sara Roberts picked up the win in both games, striking out seven batters in nine innings of work and only giving up five hits. Freshman Cassie Felton came in to pitch three innings in relief in game two, with three hits allowed.
In the second game, the Muskies kicked up their hitting efforts another notch, tallying three home runs. Junior third baseman Kourtney Peters knocked the first one over the fence at the top of the second inning to get the Muskies on the board. Schuettpelz capped off the scoring with a two-RBI single to give the Muskies a 4-0 lead.
The squad recorded another four-run scoring spurt in the fifth inning, thanks to a lead-off home run by Schuettpelz and a two-RBI homer by Lock. A two-RBI triple by junior shortstop Elisa Waltz helped close out the game in the seventh inning, while junior Jenny Zimmerman and Schuettpelz also had hits to help the team score three more runs.
Schuettpelz led the team at the plate for the game, going 4-5 with four RBIs and one run. Waltz, Peters and Zimmerman also boosted the Muskies' hitting with two hits apiece to bring the squad to 13 hits for the game.
Lakeland will continue NAC play on Sunday, Apr. 15, with a doubleheader against Dominican University. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Concordia University Chicago in River Forest, Ill.
