Men's Soccer Wins Final Game of Season
Athletics - posted on 10/26/2006
The men's soccer team (3-12-1, 2-6-1 NAC) capped off its season with a win over Marian College, 2-1, on Thursday, Oct. 26, in Fond du Lac, Wis.
Although Marian is a Northern Athletics Conference opponent, the game did not count towards either team's conference record as it was added to make up for cancelled games with Rockford College earlier in the season. Rockford cancelled its season early on due to lack of players.
Despite the fact that the Muskies will not compete in the conference tournament, finishing just shy of making the six-team tournament with a seventh-place regular season ranking, they were able to conclude their season on a high note with a victory over the Sabres.
Although Lakeland has had their share of bad luck in games this season, the team finally got the chance to benefit from an opponent's mistake as Marian scored an own goal in the 64th minute of play to break the 1-1 stalemate, giving the Muskies the win.
Freshman midfielder/forward Ryan Malo gave Lakeland the early lead with a goal in the 13th minute of play, with the assist credited to fellow freshman midfielder/forward Peter Czajka.
The Sabres tallied their only goal in the 26th minute to knot up the game at 1-1 until the second half own goal put Lakeland up indefinitely.
