The Muskie Men's Soccer squad traveled to Terre Haute, Indiana this weekend for their first two games of the season at the Rose Hulman Tournament.
However, fatigue from playing two difficult games on back to back days and a few injuries plagued the squad, resulting in two disappointing losses to Greenville and Blackburn for a 0-2 start on the year.
In their first game the team took on Greenville, but a goal in the 31st minute of the first half off a deflection went unchallenged for the remainder of the game resulting in a 1-0 loss.
"The first twenty minutes we came out fighting well and were pretty organized on the field," said head coach Dave Madsen. "The offense was a little slow getting going, but everyone was working hard and fighting through the whole game. We saw quite a few chances to score."
The next day's game against Blackburn yielded similar results, ending in another 1-0 loss for the Muskies.
"We played our best half of the weekend in the first half," said Madsen. "The guys were working together really well and we had two or three really good chances to score.
Blackburn scored their goal early on in the second half, creating a major momentum swing in their favor.
"The second half we let the other team dictate the flow of play," Madsen said. "They dominated us."
Although it cannot be seen in the final scores, Madsen is encouraged by his team's overall play on the weekend.
"I'm happy with the way we played even though the results were frustrating," he said. "A couple of people had to fight through some injuries, pushing everyone to the limit today after a hard-fought game yesterday."
Although the Muskies were unable to find the back of the net, their efforts did not go unnoticed as senior Scott Kress and sophomore Kevin Fitchett were named to the All-Tournament Team.
"They were constant threats to their opponents," said Madsen of his player's efforts.
The Muskies will look for their first win of the season on their home field against UW-Fond du Lac on Thursday, September 7 at 4:30 p.m.
