Muskies Slip to .500 in Conference Play

The men's soccer team (2-8, 2-2 NAC) was shut out by Concordia, Wis., 3-0, on Wednesday in Northern Athletics Conference action.

The game drifted toward the physical side with three yellow cards awarded, particularly in the second half as an aggressive Falcons squad tallied 10 fouls during that period alone and hounded the Muskies' defense with numerous attacks on goal.

However, the Muskies were unable to take advantage of the free kicks awarded to them off the fouls to increase their offensive production.

"The physical play was a byproduct of how we were playing in the first half," said head coach Dave Madsen. "It led to more physical contact because the guys were frustrated."

A pair of goals by the Falcons handed Lakeland a tall order to overcome early on in the game, with the score standing 2-0 at half time.

"The first half was very frustrating," Madsen said. "We let them dictate from the start, and our concentration and focus just wasn't there."

Although the Muskies had ample opportunities to rebound from the deficit in the second half, including decent shots from freshman Peter Czajka and junior Hoang Dang, the offense was unable to find the back of Concordia's net.

"Despite how we played, we still had a handful of chances to score and a chance to win the game," Madsen said.

The Muskies will attempt to keep their conference record above .500 with a win at Edgewood College in Madison, Wis., this Saturday, Oct. 7.

"Edgewood has been having a decent year," Madsen said. "If we can come out and take the initiative from the start we should be ok. If we play like we did today, it'll be a long day on Saturday. It's up to us as to what kind of team decides to show up to play."

Game time is set for 1 p.m.
