Men's Soccer Falls to Dominican

The men's soccer team (2-12, 2-6 NAC) fell to Dominican University, 6-0, in Northern Athletics Conference action on Saturday, Oct. 21, in River Forest, Ill.

An own goal by the Muskies in the 56th minute turned the game sour as Dominican pounded in three more goals within the next ten minutes to put the score out of reach, 5-0.

"That own goal was the turning point," said head coach Dave Madsen. "You could see it in our guy's body language that we were deflated."

Although Lakeland kept their opponent out of their net for a good part of the first half, the Stars notched their first goal in the 25th minute and eventually capped off the game with their sixth goal in the 81st minute.

"It's frustrating because we played very with in the first half," Madsen said. "We were frustrating Dominican and had a few one-on-one opportunities with the keeper, but we just couldn't finish."

Dominican, ranked ninth in the nation, hammered the Muskies' defense with shot attempts. The Stars recorded a whopping 29 for the game, nine of which junior goalkeeper Ryan Condon saved.

Despite the loss, Madsen believes there are some positive elements that can be taken from the game.

"I'm happy with the effort the guys showed, and they are learning a lot of good lessons this year," he said. "They keep seeing we're not far away from where we need to be."

The squad will look to get back on track in their final NAC game of the season against Benedictine University on Tuesday, Oct. 24. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Muskie Field.
