Men's Soccer Snags OT Victory over Marian
Athletics - posted on 10/17/2007
The Lakeland College men's soccer team prevailed in an overtime thriller over Marian College, 3-2, on Wednesday, Oct. 17, in Fond du Lac, Wis., to improve its Northern Athletics Conference record to 2-5.
Sophomore defender Doua Vang ended the contest in the 94th minute, knocking a solid shot past the Sabres' keeper for Lakeland's third goal.
Although the Muskies (2-11 overall) were ultimately able to prevail in the end, it did not come without its share of challenges, as Lakeland and Marian matched their offensive attacks throughout the game almost exactly with eight and seven shots, respectively.
"It was a back-and-forth type of game," said head coach Dave Madsen. "There were times where we were pushing forward against them and times they were pushing forward against us."
Lakeland's first goal came from somewhat of an abnormal place, as senior defender Tyler Haug found the back of the net on a free kick for his first goal since 2005, giving the Muskies the 1-0 advantage around the 9:30 mark.
"Tyler took a free kick about 50 yards out, and it caught the prevailing wind and their keeper was off his line," Madsen said.
The Sabres quickly countered with their first goal in the 11th minute, and the game went into halftime knotted at one goal apiece.
The Muskies continued to battle in the second half, with sophomore forward Ryan Malo notching the squad's second goal in the 55th minute, a goal that was once again countered by the Sabres about 10 minutes later that held until Vang's goal in overtime.
"When they tied it up again, it definitely kept us on our toes," Madsen said. "But, we were able to keep our concentration. It was a good victory for us, and a tribute to our effort throughout the game."
Lakeland will continue NAC competition with a tough Aurora University squad on Saturday, Oct. 20, which is also Senior Day at Lakeland.
"Aurora's a solid team front to back and is very focused," Madsen said. "But, we know we still have some games to take care of business on, and I think tonight's win will definitely help our guys' attitudes."
Game time with Aurora is set for 1 p.m. at Muskie Field.
