Muskies Sweep Warriors

The Lakeland baseball team swept Northern Athletics Conference foe Wisconsin Lutheran 15-9 and 9-6 in action on Saturday in Sheboygan.

In game one, the Muskies (11-15, 7-7 NAC) jumped out to a 3-1 lead over the Warriors (3-19, 2-12 NAC). The Warriors tied things up in the top of the sixth. The Muskies then responded with five runs in the bottom of the sixth as Tyler Schmitt doubled to send three runners in. On the next play, Mitch Heinemeyer hit a home run to send Schmitt and himself home, making it an 8-3 contest. Wisconsin Lutheran put three more on the board the following inning, again the Muskies responded, this time with seven runs. The Warriors attempted a comeback with a few runs to close out the contest.

Anschutz, Schmitt, Alex Grant and Shawn Loch all went 2-4 at the plate. Grant also led the team with three hits, while Schmitt had five RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Kris Saiberlich picked up the win, allowing nine hits and five strike outs.

Game two saw the Muskie bats stay hot, as they jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the fourth inning.  In the fifth inning the Muskies added four more runs, including Jacob Heinemeyer singling to center field to send a pair of runners home. The Warriors put five runs on the board in the seventh inning and one in the eighth. The Muskies responded with a pair of runs in the eighth inning, including a home run by Anschutz.

Junior pitcher Zack Schmitz picked up the win in seven innings striking out five batters.

The Muskies will travel to Kenosha, Wis. for a doubleheader against Carthage College tomorrow. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
