Softball Stays in NAC Race, Sweeps Sabres

Athletics - posted on 4/24/2007

The Lakeland softball team successfully rebounded from a pair of disappointing losses to Benedictine on Saturday, sweeping Marian College, 2-0, 5-4, in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader on Tuesday, Apr. 24, in Fond du Lac, Wis.

Freshman Sara Roberts continued to prove her dominance on the mound, throwing her third no-hitter this season in game one for the complete game.

The Muskies (24-8, 17-3 NAC) were able to recover their offensive power at the plate, as junior outfielders Sonja Barone and Rebecca Schuettpelz each hit a triple in the early innings of the game, but the score still remained deadlocked at 0-0. However, senior catcher Katie Yeager provided the squad with the runs it needed to gain the advantage, hitting a two-RBI single in the seventh inning to send home Barone and sophomore pinch runner Christina Schultz.

Schuettpelz led the Muskies at the plate with two of the team's six hits on three at-bats.

After being shut out in game one, the Sabres (22-12, 14-6 NAC) were quick to get on the board in the second game, gaining a 1-0 edge at the top of the first inning. The Muskies answered back in the second inning, boosted by junior first baseman Allison Lock's double that sent junior third baseman Kourtney Peters home for one of the team's two runs in the inning.

Marian would score two more runs in the third inning to gain a 3-2 advantage, but Lakeland continued to battle with one run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to go up, 5-3. The Muskies used three hits to cap off their scoring in the fifth, as freshman second baseman KC Blahnik, junior shortstop Elisa Waltz and Schuettpelz each hit a single to work their way around the bases.

The Sabres would chalk up one more run in the sixth inning, but were unable to find a way to get a hit off freshman pitcher Cassie Felton for the remainder of the game. Felton picked up the win after relieving Roberts in the fourth inning, allowing only two hits and tallying two strikeouts.

Waltz, Barone and Lock led the team on offense in the second game, going 2-3 at the plate with Barone scoring two runs. Yeager also provided the team with a big boost once again, recording two RBIs on one hit.

The Muskies will be back in action on Wednesday, Apr. 25, facing off with non-conference opponent Carroll College. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Lakeland.
