The Lakeland baseball team won't get a chance to finish its game against Rockford after all.
Coaches from both teams decided Monday that the Regents will get a 13-12 win over the Muskies as a result of Sunday's game two at RiverHawks Stadium in Loves Park, Ill.
Sunday night's contest was suspended in the bottom of the eighth inning due to lightning. It was originally thought the final inning would need to be completed due to an NCAA rule that all games must be completed or go into the books as a tie. However, both coaches can override that rule by deciding that the game can officially end after five innings, but that fact was not known last night. The decision to call the game was made this morning after speaking with Northern Athletics Conference Commissioner Steve Larson.
As for the game, Lakeland (12-20, 8-10 NAC) got things rolling early with four runs in the first inning. Tyler Schmitt and Mitch Heinemeyer both singled to each add a RBI. Then Adam Brown grounded out for an RBI and Jacob Heinemeyer doubled to send a run in. The Regents (22-11, 15-4 NAC) answered with nine runs over the course of the next five innings, making it a 9-4 contest.
The Muskies tacked on five more runs in the sixth inning. Brett Anschutz doubled to send three runs home, while Brown added a double for a RBI. Jacob Heinemeyer also singled to send a run in to tie the game up at 9-9. Once again the Regents responded, this time with three hits in the bottom of the inning to jump ahead 12-9.
In the seventh, Mitch Heinemeyer hit a home run to give the Muskies a pair on the board. The Regents followed with a score of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Muskies last score and the last score of the game came in the top of the eighth when Jake Schoemann hit a sacrifice fly into center to send a run in. After the Muskies were done batting the game was suspended due to the lightning.
Jacob Heinemeyer was 5-5 from the plate for the Muskies with two RBI, while Anschutz and Mitch Heinemeyer each had three RBI.
Jake VanCamp took the loss for the Muskies on the mound allowing five hits in 3.2 innings of work.
The Muskies will be in action again on Friday as they face Dominican University in River Forest, Ill. Game time is set for Noon.
Lakeland is now seventh in the Northern Athletics Conference baseball standings. The top four conference teams will earn spots to the NAC Tournament based on conference play during the regular season.
