Muskies Open Conference Play With Win
Athletics - posted on 11/28/2007
The Lakeland College men's basketball team (1-3, 1-0 NAC) registered its first win of the season with an 70-57 victory over Northern Athletics Conference foe Edgewood College (1-3, 0-1 NAC) on Wednesday night on its home court.
The Muskies led 39-30 at halftime and stretched the lead to as many as 16 points early in the second half. But the Eagles, picked by league coaches to finish second in the NAC preseason poll, staged a comeback to take a 52-50 lead with 7:07 remaining. Senior Kris Saiberlich hit a 3-pointer less than a minute later to give the Muskies back the lead. The Eagles tied the game at 56 with 4:04 remaining, but that was as close as the Edgewood would get.
"The biggest difference today was we played hard for 40 minutes," said Lakeland head coach Kyle Brumett. "We were much better from the free throw line and only turned the ball over nine times. We didn't shoot it great in the second half, but we played hard on the defensive end and made it hard for them to score. Our depth played a big role in this win - this was a team effort. I have a locker room full of guys with great character and I'm really proud of them."
Senior Aaron Regal led the Muskies in scoring with 21 points. Senior Shane Grube also put together a stellar game with 16 points, seven rebounds and went 6-6 from the free-throw line.
"Aaron played the way we know he can and he did great tonight," said Brumett. "Shane Grube was outstanding."
Saiberlich shrugged off the affects of an injury he suffered when he collided with a player in Saturday's loss at UW-Stevens Point to finish with 14 points.
"Kris Saiberlich comes out with 10 stitches above his eye," said Brumett. "There was never a moment, from the time we picked him up off the floor at Stevens Point, that he ever considered not playing. That is pretty strong character, and a tough kid. I am really proud of him."
Senior Danny Ehnert anchored the Muskies' defensive game with eight rebounds.
"Danny did a great job defensively guarding two of the better players in our conference, and did a great job on the boards," said Brumett. "David Hoerres really battled for us tonight as well."
The Muskies will continue NAC play on Saturday, Dec. 1, as they take on Concordia University, Wis., in Mequon. Game time is set for 4:15 p.m.
